unfortunately losers driving drunk and hitting and severely injuring or killing very succesful people is not a rare occurence in Austin.

This is the type of story where a Texas tag should be used.

Sadly, I can't help but think that his time would be better served helping the injured. It's great that he wanted the drunk off the streets, but we've all heard plenty of stories about slap-on-the-wrist fines for such things, or even outright scofflaws.

Judging by that Gomer Pyle look on his face and the scar on his noggin, the boy can't help but be stupid.

Perez said an officer recognized him Friday, asking him, "Didn't you try to do this about nine months ago?"

The risk of a slap on the wrist fine is reason to not stop this guy? Come on. Also, the article doesn't mention it but I'll bet the people were hit in a busy enough area that others were around to assist with their needs.

Perez said he reached into the car to pull out the driver, who appeared to be intoxicated and was vomiting.

I see the problem here. Multi-tasking. You think you can do more than one thing efficiently, but do neither as well.

Perez seems to be something of a chest-beating AW ("daddy didn't bring up cowards") with daddy issues (dude, you're 47 and calling your paternal parent daddy?). He's also opening himself up to liability here in a big way. Forget letting the cops do the chasing, he does it himself. Forget doing what he could at the crash site (summon professional assistance, crowd control, prevent further injuries), there's no glory in that. Forget letting trained personnel with appropriate equipment (and insurance) extract the guy from his wrecked car, he just pulls the guy out bodily and hogties him with a belt.

He's going to keep pulling this sort of thing until it goes sour on him, and then he'll be shocked to be held accountable for the bad outcome.

According to the article: this guy's calling is chasing people, not medical care. This guy feels like a big cowboy right now and couldn't be happier, till his horse breaks down. Although lately the courts are steadily cracking down harder on DWI's offences. Unless you have money of course, than you may continue home.

It's Texas. If he tries it a third time, the law of averages says the drunk will be carrying a gun.

Of course, whether the drunk can hit anything depends on how drunk he is...

FTFA: Perez said he briefly lost sight of the driver, but then heard a crash and caught up. Perez pulled up close to the car, he said, yelling at the driver to get out. The driver stopped to look at him, Perez said, then crashed around West 10th and Rio Grande streets before coming to a stop.

So how many times did the guy crash?

This newspaper obviously has no editorial staff, and recruits reporters from the local middle schools.

Having read the Statesman, I'm going to say no. Unfortunately the same is true for the Chronicle, especially their movie reviewers.

This happened in a busy area. Plenty of people to help the injured and catching this dumb ass will probably prevent him from killing someone else in the future. If I see him out I'll definitely buy him a drink.

He didn't assault the guy, just detained him until police arrived. Doesn't really sound like a vigilante but more like a responsible person who was in the right place at the right time and wasn't afraid to do the right thing (unlike many of the precious little snowflakes here on Fark I'm sorry to say).

The closest thing to an American crotch-rocket are those gasoline powered riding vibrators, for people who are afraid of accidentally going fast.

The kind of nonsense you always hear from the Criminal Rights crowd

I like to see Mr Drunk try to sue this man. Even in the Peoples Republic of Austin, you probably will not find a jury to vote against him

He wasn't riding a Kwacker, if that helps.

An XR1200 qualifies as a crotch-rocket. Sort of. But few, if any, Americans buy this model.

That is a moot point, though. Just about any motorcycle could have caught up with a crashed Impala driven by a vomiting drunk. As far as minivans that can do better than 14s, the only one I can think of is a Mercedes R-class AMG and those are extremely rare. Also, please don't call the R-class a minivan !

Hog tied? In Austin, you can tell the sexual preference by whether the loop is clockwise or counterclockwise (or really kinky: braided).

Once you've gone braided, you can never be disuaded.
