After the air traffic controllers failed to show up for their 07:00 start, airport deputy manager Janarthanan instructed Mr Basha, whose English was described as broken, to operate the radio in the control tower.

Airport Authority of India regional executive director D Devaraj told the Mail Today: "No-one doubts Basha's intention to help during a crisis. He wanted the flight to land safely. But he is untrained and must not attempt to do the ATC's job. Mere good intention is not enough in this case."

Wait. First he was instructed to do it, then afterward chastised for doing it? Make up your minds!

On top of that, if the Air Traffic Controller was there and doing his farking job, someone who is untrained wouldn't have to do it.

Oh noes, pilots had to land at an uncontrolled airport, I'm surprised they all didn't crash and die. That firefighter is a hero.

FirstNationalBastard: someone who is untrained wouldn't have to do it.

This is why the fireman should've let the planes crash so he could put the flames out, like he was trained.

Man, I hope they don't fire him from his regular job in tech support.

The bonus is that the ATC now get a pay cut, since some untrained dick was able to do their job for them.

So in third-world countries, there aren't sufficient personnel trained in western technology, and thus non-trained people have to do jobs otherwise done by trained professionals? I'm shocked.

Been there. Seen this. Um...why did this particular flight make the headlines?

They bought their tickets - they knew what they were getting into.

I say let 'em crash...

An airport with seven flights a day has a control tower? What a colossal waste of money.

News flash: Pilots do not need ATC "assistance" to land a plane. They need to to keep from hitting other planes, which is not an issue at all at a dead airport like this.

You know, sometimes I think we ask too much of our fire men.

Getting cats down from trees, OK. The fire men have the long ladders. But somebody else should have to guide the airplanes down. They should round up some kids from the mall in the airport and promise them their choice of an XBox or a Wii or Playstation if they get the plane down without any casualties or major damage. As we Farkers know, any nine year old can do an air traffic controller's job.

I trained at an airport where after hours you could still cal up the landing lights after fark.

If you want to know the rest of my distaste look up L3 Air Traffic Control.

OK, you're 100 percent right of course. But the poor bastard didn't know that when he got ordered up into the tower. "Hero" might be a bit much but can we at least credit him with not needing a change of underwear when he got the order?

/After all, he did pour every light they've got on to that field!

It's an entirely different kind of flying all together.

The airport here (RSW) closes their tower at midnight. At that point, the pilots become responsible for their own separation.

Its really the only sensible thing to do. If its done properly, therapeutically, there's no danger involved.

Makes me think that the fireman was probably of some lower caste. You can toss those people around at will, right ?
