Is there an image of space that isn't stunning? If so, I'd like to see it.

When you look at those hundreds of stars, it makes you wonder. What's for dinner?

Yes, there is.

It looks like black. And you can't see any variation in that.

Most of space is pretty boring.

kind of looks like there's a faint outline of a cat in that picture above the galactic core.

Your exposure time isn't long enough (new window).

Would it have been so hard to have a link in the article to a full resolution version? Awesome pic though.

I got to do the night viewing program at Kitt Peak in Tucson a few weeks ago, and brought my camera and tripod along...even with my fumbling about I got a few nice shots. The seeing really is amazing up there; you can see so many starts it's actually hard to pick out some constellations. Here's a shot taken while viewing the Orion Nebula through their 20-inch scope:

That's a nice pic for "fumbling" about, lol. Arizona is simply amazing for viewing the night sky. Closest I've ever come to seeing that many stars was in Eastern Colorado where my aunt lived in the boonies and the closest neighbor was two miles away. It's really quite breathtaking.

Thanks, starrgazyr. I'm from Montana and we get similar skies with even less light pollution (but obviously fewer clear nights). The dry air and elevation on Kitt Peak help too. We got to watch sunset from the peak and could see the earth's shadow against the atmosphere behind us. We could also see the zodiacal light once it was fully dark, and observed Venus, Jupiter, and the Crab Nebula as well as the Orion Nebula. We also looked at the Andromeda Galaxy and the Pleiades through binoculars. It's a total geekfest.

Wolfman Johnny: Here's a hard link to the photo if you want to copy/paste and download. Enjoy!

PS. Here's another shot from up there, of one of the bigger domes. Prob. a 5-minute exposure.

I know, right? My problem is, the last time I tried to put one on my our desktop, Sharpless 2-106 if I recall, Mrs. Croesius changed it back to our previous image. Our wedding picture.

I wanna geek out now and then, dammit!

Here's Sharpless, in decent resolution, so that I may share it at least.

Get a better camera, longer exposure and retake that picture. I bet it comes out a lot more interesting.

YOU may see that, but the Hubble can look at that same spot and see this:
