Who was that? Lambert doesn't "sound" like Farrokh, but he covers Queen songs very well.
Brian and Roger can use whomever they want. No one can ever replace Freddie - "there can only be one".

No one can EVER replace Freddie. But it's clear the Brian May, et. al. were awesome when collaborating with a Freddie-like singer, and they found one.

I own most of the Queen "live" videos, and yes, Freddie was outlandish and foppy, but his voice was..well..let's say no one has ever come close.
What made Queen was the combination of all 4 onstage members. Even though John Deacon was pretty laid back, the other 3 were tremendous musicians, writers and performers.

Anyone else have the "Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert"? Amazing.

In my opinion, Axl Rose's career peaked about halfway through his performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" with Elton John at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. It was all downhill from there...

This. Number one, I'm sorry, but they need to stop calling themselves Queen. Without Freddie, it just is absolutely not Queen. Number two, he's an American Idol singer with a voice that just cannot compete with Freddie. You need to be able to do a hell of a lot to do his parts in terms of range, different styles, etc., and I'm fairly certain he can't. Never heard him do anything but his usual pop whine.

Dumski: Even though John Deacon was pretty laid back, the other 3 were tremendous musicians, writers and performers.

Yes, but John's playing was ridiculously underrated. Not to mention that although he didn't get as many contributions in, he is just as good of a writer as Brian, and a helluva lot better than Roger (whose songs, IMHO, were the weakest out of all four member's contributions). Again, Freddie was the one that came up with stuff like Bohemian, Somebody to Love, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Let Me Entertain You....

\I do have to admit, if they do ever get around to filming Mercury, I'm damned curious to see what Sacha will do with the role.

I agree with your concerns. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but Queen always bills themselves separately from the singer they perform with now. I am guessing because, yes, it's not QUEEN without Freddie. It seems like that's why they were called "Paul Rodgers + Queen" instead of just "Queen."

\I do have to admit, if they do ever get around to filming Mercury, I'm damned curious to see what Sacha will do with the role.

Seconded!

Once they got past the operetta, yup. Though I do say I'm still disappointed in Robert Palmer's performance that night too, on one of my favorite Queen songs ever.

Yeah, I didn't write that post properly about Deacon. It came across wrong. Of course he was underrated.. and he wrote some of Queens best: "Another one Bites The Dust", "You're My Best Friend" and "I Want To Break Free", among others.
And yes, I am curious about Cohen too.

Yup. Wasn't even thinking about Axl. He and GNR weren't worthy to be there among the others performing. Put aside him and GNR, having Iommi and May playing together was worth it for me. Also, it had to be James Hetfields' wet dream to sing "Stone Cold Crazy" with his idols.

The problem is George is an on-going disaster on ice, and he's so delicate that he has a hard time under normal circumstances getting through a tour without canceling dates. Given that he just almost died of a respiratory infection in Austria, he's in worse shape than usual at the moment.

I hate American Idol, and actually think Lambert is a good choice for both him and the band.

Gary Mullen sounds like Freddie in the 80's, and that's what you'd want. This Mark Martel guy is like young Freddie. But Gary Mullen nails it down perfectly. Either would be preferable to Adam Lambert's over the top warbling anyway.

IMHO, Deacon was the weakest songwriter, although he did write 2 or 3 great ones.

We're all forgetting the point. We could get Freddie's DNA and literally clone him. And literally try to give him the same musical education. And make sure he had the same dental architecture...and it wouldn't be the same. (Watch "The Boys from Brazil, ha ha.) We are all sad that Freddie is dead. Queen is dead. We'll never hear "Hammer to Fall" as good as it was in 1984.

I am happy to see a similarly theatrical personality try to interpret the songs of Brian May, et. al. Look at "We Will Rock You," the musical. Kerry Ellis is a ridiculous, farking awesome vocalist. Brian May thought so much of Ms. Ellis that he performed with her for the queen queen and produced her record. (Sorry; there's an ad, but it benefits the official Queen folks. Plus, she's hot.) Link I know...Kerry Ellis can never be a REPLACEMENT for Freddie. Adam Lambert cannot replace Freddie. But goshdarnit...I want some awesome music. They could provide it. (Kerry has. Adam...let's see.)

Exactly this.
Queen now, for me, have become their own tribute act. I doubt very much the current version would play any non-single tracks from before 1980 - maybe sneak in Brighton Rock so Brian can twiddle for 20 minutes.
For me, Queen were perfect up to A Day At The Races (one of my tied-for-top-5-albums-ever). Once they went full 80s is all started going a bit bland, really. A few highlights here and there but nothing on the art-rock and odd ditty (Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon) that made them stand out in the 70s.
The band, as an entity, was truly greater than the sum of it's parts. None of their individual projects ever came close to the awesomeness of them all together.

The article seems to say they want to work with Lambert for the next tour, not give him Freddie's job. This has been Queens SOP since Freddie died. No albums planned, no permanent partnership. OK, unitednihilist, let me tell you a little tale that happened over the past few hours. I am not a hip man. I am a very uncool 41 year old dad who drives a minivan. My days of jumping up onstage and singing with David Bowie at Radio City Music Hall on TV and Iggy and the Stooges at the Orpheum in Boston (both absolutely true) are sadly in the past. Point being: I have no clue what's new or cool and finding interesting new artists is getting harder and harder for this fossil.

So I see your post. I see a pic of a band that after clicking the link turns out to be one Foxy Shazzam from Cincinatti. I have only read their name in print for the first time maybe 2 weeks ago, tops. The pic in your post made me think "OK, I just gotta hear what these guys might sound like". So I clicked. And watched. 3 times in a row. Googled the crap out of them. Had to bring my kids to see their great-grandmother, but then I swung by the mall and paid actual real American dollars to buy Foxy Shazzam's 2010 major label debut. Listened to the whole album and promptly feel in love with this band and posted the link on several friends' Facebook pages and even called an old friend half the country away and told him to buy the album, sight unseen (or rather "sound unheard"), and if he didn't love the sh*t out of it, I'd pay him twice the money back. That's how much I love this band already.

So thanks. And here's to the power of the internet!

No one will ever replace Mercury but I love Lambert as well so I look forward to this.

Thanks! I like this.

That's weird, also 41, kids, married,(no mini van though) not hip, etc, and I heard Foxy Shazzam on one of my kids video games a month ago and thought the same thing. Why have I not heard of this band before? I'm snowboarding 4/5 days a week and this is always blasting inside the helmet.

I had never heard of Foxy Shazzam until this thread.
Looked them up on youtube.
the singer may look like Freddie, but he sounds more like Russel Mael from Sparks.

Cool band, thanks for the introduction!

eddievercetti: What about the guy who literally sounded like Freddie?
Dammit so much!

MARC MARTEL.
First time I saw his audition video I was floored.
Complete People's Choice.
He even looks a little like Freddie and could be made to look even more so.

Audition: new window

Ellen show appearance - he even plays piano, CAN LAMBERT?!

Don't the Queen guys have enough money saved up to not do crap like this?

Sure - hell, Doctor Brian May can go noodle around with theoretical physics for the rest of his life. I think they're doing it for the lulz these days.
