Who was that? Lambert doesn't "sound" like Farrokh, but he covers Queen songs very well.
Brian and Roger can use whomever they want. No one can ever replace Freddie - "there can only be one".

/Queen - Live Aid 1985. Best damn live rock performance ever.

I seem to remember him doing a Queen song or two on American Idol- I thought he did a great job with them.

I believe you're referring to Gary Mullen (new window). It's farking eerie listening to him in some ways. The dude has PIPES and can sound exactly like Freddie.

I'm not very angry at the thought of Adam Lambert + Queen. Lambert is different from Freddie, but they both have a very theatrical persona.

Yeah, I could see that.

SPIFFY???!!!!

This is anything but spiffy. This is a big farking fail. Freddie would love him? Yeah, maybe in the literal sense. Lambert replacing Mercury is a farking abomination. Shame on Brian May, Roger Taylor and the modmins for greenlighting this with the spiffy tag.

No one can EVER replace Freddie. But it's clear the Brian May, et. al. were awesome when collaborating with a Freddie-like singer, and they found one.

I saw Freddie in some ridiculous get ups, some frankly embarrassing outfits, doing ridiculous stunts and looking like a complete ponce and a geek at the same time.

That being said, the very thought of this:

I own most of the Queen "live" videos, and yes, Freddie was outlandish and foppy, but his voice was..well..let's say no one has ever come close.
What made Queen was the combination of all 4 onstage members. Even though John Deacon was pretty laid back, the other 3 were tremendous musicians, writers and performers.

Anyone else have the "Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert"? Amazing.

In my opinion, Axl Rose's career peaked about halfway through his performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" with Elton John at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. It was all downhill from there...

This. Number one, I'm sorry, but they need to stop calling themselves Queen. Without Freddie, it just is absolutely not Queen. Number two, he's an American Idol singer with a voice that just cannot compete with Freddie. You need to be able to do a hell of a lot to do his parts in terms of range, different styles, etc., and I'm fairly certain he can't. Never heard him do anything but his usual pop whine.

Dumski: Even though John Deacon was pretty laid back, the other 3 were tremendous musicians, writers and performers.

Yes, but John's playing was ridiculously underrated. Not to mention that although he didn't get as many contributions in, he is just as good of a writer as Brian, and a helluva lot better than Roger (whose songs, IMHO, were the weakest out of all four member's contributions). Again, Freddie was the one that came up with stuff like Bohemian, Somebody to Love, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Let Me Entertain You....

\I do have to admit, if they do ever get around to filming Mercury, I'm damned curious to see what Sacha will do with the role.

I agree with your concerns. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but Queen always bills themselves separately from the singer they perform with now. I am guessing because, yes, it's not QUEEN without Freddie. It seems like that's why they were called "Paul Rodgers + Queen" instead of just "Queen."

Seconded!

Once they got past the operetta, yup. Though I do say I'm still disappointed in Robert Palmer's performance that night too, on one of my favorite Queen songs ever.

Yeah, I didn't write that post properly about Deacon. It came across wrong. Of course he was underrated.. and he wrote some of Queens best: "Another one Bites The Dust", "You're My Best Friend" and "I Want To Break Free", among others.
And yes, I am curious about Cohen too.

Axl Rose is one of the worst singers in all creation, past and present. When I saw that slimy poser bastard come slinking across the stage to sing the up-tempo bit at the end of Bohemian Rhapsody, I wanted to do an Elvis to my farking TV.

/and by that I mean feed it a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich

Yup. Wasn't even thinking about Axl. He and GNR weren't worthy to be there among the others performing. Put aside him and GNR, having Iommi and May playing together was worth it for me. Also, it had to be James Hetfields' wet dream to sing "Stone Cold Crazy" with his idols.

I don't think he's going to be a part of Queen. I bet it's probably something similar to the Queen + Paul Rodgers deal from a few years back.

John Deacon, you were an integral part of Queen, and wrote some awesome songs. Thank you for having the sense to understand that your band was the sum of its parts, and when Freddie died it was no more. Brian and Roger are tremendous musicians, but they are not Queen any more than Roger and Pete are The Who.

Anyone who does not know this album is missing out on 45 minutes of pure awesomeness

The problem is George is an on-going disaster on ice, and he's so delicate that he has a hard time under normal circumstances getting through a tour without canceling dates. Given that he just almost died of a respiratory infection in Austria, he's in worse shape than usual at the moment.

I hate American Idol, and actually think Lambert is a good choice for both him and the band.

Okay...okay...I've seen that guy. I agree with you that the dude can sing and sounds kinda like Freddie. My problem is that he is in a Christian rock band and he's either cheating on Jesus by singing Queen or he would be a Disney Freddie. I'm sorry, but you just can't do a Disney version of Freddie.

Being a Queen fan since I was a kid in the 70's, I have to say that when Freddy died, so did Queen. Brian and Roger can keep on performing if they like, they can even do some of the old songs, but they need to stop calling themselves Queen.

Gary Mullen sounds like Freddie in the 80's, and that's what you'd want. This Mark Martel guy is like young Freddie. But Gary Mullen nails it down perfectly. Either would be preferable to Adam Lambert's over the top warbling anyway.

Amazingly enough I think Pink actually has a decent amount of talent. I'm not usually one for much pop music, but I like some of her work, and thought she did pretty good on that Bohemian Rhapsody cover she did.

With Adam Lambert in the mix, I agree with you. If it was one of the other people who actually sound a lot closer to Freddie, then it would be fine. But Adam Lambert is an over-the-top diva like Mariah Carey, and he'll fark it up.

I believe that you, like me, mistaken this news as being regarding the 'young performers Queen touring band' contest?

you refer to the young man from montreal who had the "somebody to love" submission video, yes?

FArk all you haters. With exception of Martel's skills (which is weird typing that because my sister is named Martelle) I think Lambert is a great choice.

1. Flamboyant? Check
2. Phenomenal range? Check
3. Pipes? Check
4. Enough bravado to make the girls AND the guys weak in the knees? Yep

Good luck, Adam, we'll be in the front when you get to Houston!

and a helluva lot better than Roger (whose songs, IMHO, were the weakest out of all four member's contributions)

hey! I happen to like Roger's songs with Queen! They're often more "rock n' roll" than Brian. ("fight from the inside", "all that jazz")

IMHO, Deacon was the weakest songwriter, although he did write 2 or 3 great ones.

/ Ok, "fun it" isn't a great Roger song.
// CSB: when i was in my short "backwards message" phase when i was a teen, I reversed "Don't Shove it............ Fun it!",
and it came out sounding a hell of a lot like "Get off me!.............you slut!"
