South Sudan (capital: Juba) is predominantly made up of black africans who are animists, christians, etc. Sudan (capital: Khartoum) is populated by arab africans who are muslim. For the record, the South Sudanese (generally speaking) are not the biggest fans of the Religion of Peace^TM either.

The issues on display in this news article stem from inter-tribal conflicts that have been going on since forever. The newness and novelty of forming the nation of South Sudan has worn off and now it's back to the same routine of tribal conflict. That's what you're seeing here.

Mr. ManifestDestiny served a year's tour of duty with the UN in South Sudan, only coming home this past September. So yeah, this is something I know a little about.
