pretty cool

The torch of the Statue of Liberty would not quite peek out of the deepest points of the crevasse currently opening up across the Pine Island Glacier ice shelf in Antarctica. This image is based on data from the Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM), which flew over the rift on NASA's DC-8 on Oct. 26, 2011 as part of NASA's Operation IceBridge. The ice shelf hasn't calved a major iceberg since 2001, and IceBridge took advantage of the opportunity afforded by spotting the crack to fly over and make detailed measurements. The scale at the bottom was taken from one of the rift's widest single points. For much of the line the DC-8 flew over it, the crevasse was about 80 meters wide. It of course is changing all the time. Credit: Kyle Krabill/NASA/ATM

Is this the first-ever headline involving a giant crack that did not end in a "your mom" joke?

Antarctica is so vast that the pictures give you no sense of scale

So help us out here Mr Science Guy. How many Rhode Islands is that?

So, any guesstimates on what the police place the street value of all that crack would be? Probably higher than the GDP of the whole planet!

Farabor: So, any guesstimates on what the police place the street value of all that crack would be? Probably higher than the GDP of the whole planet!

Yah but considering how far it is from the nearest evidence locker it'd be barely worth anything by the time they checked it in.

I see that you don't put it up there with attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion or C-beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.

Neat-o. Call back when the iceberg is about to break off. Calve. Whatever. Because I bet it makes a big noise.
