I'd say.

Sure, take the turd out of the punch bowl, but everyone still knows there was a turd in it.

Meh... They've showed their hand. I don't think a whole lot of people will be eager to support such a corrupt group of right-wing morons.

2012-02-03 12:29:22 PM
It's a weak pun for a weak apology.

Now lets talk about why the fundy who started this mess is still working for them.

2012-02-03 12:32:29 PM
Well that plan sure went tits-up in a hurry.

2012-02-03 12:32:54 PM
So they had a legal, fiduciary duty (and say it wasn't political), but didn't like the reaction, so they changed how they deal with legal, fiduciary duties? That sounds...damage controly.

It doesn't sound like they reversed the funding decision... since existing grants weren't on the chopping block, but future application of grants would be...

Also, broad

Jesus the anger here is disgusting. Corrupt? Because they didn't want to keep using the money people donated to fight breast cancer to support Planned Parenthood, which at best is a fourth-rate organization in terms of anti-breast cancer efforts? How is that corrupt?

2012-02-03 12:34:46 PM
Too many people were saying ta-ta to the ta-tas

2012-02-03 12:34:54 PM
Feh, they didn't reverse shiat. Re read the letter. They're going to continue to pay out the grants they've already issued and will let PP apply in the future. There's no guarantee of future funding in there.

2012-02-03 12:35:14 PM
It's telling that going against an organization like Planned Parenthood was so unpopular with Americans that it nearly destroyed Komen in the span of a single week.

I know this won't penetrate the fundie rightest cocoon, though, and they'll continue to get smacked-down for more stupid stunts like this in the future.

What? Am I supposed to cheer now that I know they will spend half as much on cancer screenings at PP next year as they will spend on political lobbyists like Handel. Sorry, SGK, your ship sailed... I now know better than to trust you with my money.

Too late. They've already pissed off the left and now they've pissed off the right for caving in. There goes more funding for SGK. Keep shooting yourselves in the foot.

And they didn't change their mind because they thought about it and thought it was the right thing to do. They changed their mind because of the negative publicity and the power of social media and the internet to instantly rage on corporations/organizations that do the wrong thing and think they can get away with it. Now if you do the wrong thing you will be held accountable (immediately) and you will suffer (immediately) and for a long time after.

2012-02-03 12:36:34 PM
While this wont destroy this organization it's going to significantly reduce the support. Those wildly popular marathons are going to be less crowded.

In the end it is a good thing, maybe all those people who donated money "for the cure" only to find out it was going "for lots of things other than the cure" will donate their money directly to organizations that are funding real cancer research rather than funding lawyers to defend a stupid brand name.

Some of these puns are so bad, so unbearable -- they're almost unnoticeable.

Is that art?

mikebdoss: So they had a legal, fiduciary duty (and say it wasn't political), but didn't like the reaction, so they changed how they deal with legal, fiduciary duties? That sounds...damage controly.

I'm guessing someone pointed out that other sizable organizations fell under their new rule banning grants to organizations under investigation (Penn State has been mentioned a few times), and given a choice between being damned for consistency and being damned for hypocrisy, they chose to reverse course. I'll bet the rule in question gets tossed down the memory hole so Pink Ribbons, Inc. can go back to making tens of millions of dollars from fundraising.

Oh, I don't know. Perhaps that they donate to Penn State, which is, at best, a 200th-rate organization in terms of actual screening and not AstraZeneca drug research?

Yes. This is meaningless unless SGK also fires Karen Handel, a "pro-choice" polititian who created this mess in her new executive role for them. She has a religious/political agenda and will not be swayed from implementing it. As stated, Planned Parenthood will need to apply for any new grants. Until handel goes, none will be approved.

How DARE they not support other unrelated causes I feel are socially correct!!!

Hopefully, they'll all get breast cancer now. That'll teach'em.

2012-02-03 12:39:12 PM
It is great though, that this shift HAS been due to people showing their support/displeasure of each position with dollars and directed feedback to the organizations in question. Nothing legal was required, no one stood on the floor of the Senate about it, it was just a swift movement of money, and now we are here.

Same sort of thing happened when Bank of America proposed the idiotic $5 to use a debit card. Be it a company or an organization, if people clearly tell them when they are making stupid moves, the company or org will either recognize that and change course, or else suffer the consequences.

At this point the CEO and Board Chair need to go too. Keep in mind the Board voted for this crap.

Of course, just because PP is welcome to once again apply for future grants doesn't mean SGK won't find a reason to turn them down.

2012-02-03 12:39:57 PM
I take solace knowing that a lot of influential people recognize that Planned Parenthood, and the services it offers, are an integral part of society. It would be great if the next time people start trying to take away funding from something like this, they would be laughed at and given a hearty "STFU" before it is allowed to progress.

2012-02-03 12:40:01 PM
The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.

Lies. And we have the tweets to prove it.
