I had no interest in watching it for years. Never even caught a re-run. Then recently watched the first 6 seasons on Netflix and I am totally hooked.
Should have known anything with Neil P. Harris in it would be funny.

Pretty much this for me also. I watched the whole series in 2-3 days on a long weekend. I don't know how to get caught up on the current season though without having to pay Amazon an exorbitant amount per episode

The cast is pretty high profile now, which I'm sure helps. NPH is well known again, Jason Segel was in the Muppets and several other big movies, and a lot of people know Alyson from Buffy. With Cobie in the Avengers this summer, you are going to have even more people flipping through the channels and noticing "that person from that show/movie I liked", stopping to watch an episode, and getting hooked.
/I only tuned in to watch originally because I was curious about Alyson's new show

Most of the acting is good (sorry, Alysson Hannigan), the writing is clever (see: the monkey climbing up the Empire State Building, or really, that whole episode), and the visuals in the non-bar scenes are more interesting than sit-com average.
Plus, it's easy to like the characters. Even the jerk of the bunch is only horrible to people who aren't in the main cast (and in a cartoony, jokey way), and it doesn't hurt that Harris does an outstanding acting job. Watch how much he conveys in every scene with his expressions and gestures, then compare Barney to a normal person.

They stumbled a few times. In fact, every time they attempt to add another character to the core cast, it goes downhill. The story arc with Ted and Stella almost made me abandon the series altogether, although it did have its moments (it did give us "The Wedding Bride"). The two times they tried adding in a "Robin's boyfriend" character were unmitigated disasters. Kal Penn, who is actually a pretty good comedic actor, bombed. And the episodes where she falls for her no-ambition co anchor Don just annoyed me. Again, they both had their moments (e.g. the "here's how it happened" episode where Barney starts/ends up in the East River), but in the main they mostly stunk.
Will How I Met Your Mother ever get their "Cousin Oliver" without ruining the chemistry of the main cast? Hard to say. So far, though, they've failed.
Wait- did I just admit to knowing way to much about a rom-com TV series? Dangit, there goes my man card.

Only watched a few episodes, but its got enjoyable characters paired with some witty writing, and Neil Patrick Harris steals/owns/hyperboles the show.
At the very least, it's non-annoying background noise, which is more than anything currently on NBC can say.

Why did Community never get ratings? It was after the same demo as Big Bang Theory and you could watch full-episodes of Community online the next day but until this year, you could only watch clips of Big Bang online.
This is an easy game. What else you got?

Ted Moseby is the worst character on television. Can't stand him. Marshall is annoying, I don't buy him as a nice guy lawyer at all and his humor is forced and unnatural. NPH is the lifeblood of that show and the only reason for me to watch it. That guy can act and his delivery is perfect. Redhead girl is cute. Robin is just kind of there. Also, they're all hardcore alcoholics yet they play it off like they're only fun loving 20 somethings even though they're in their 30s and are in that bar EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Ted is the worst, should've been in rehab more than once. I think they could learn something from Cheers and how Sam had a drinking problem but stayed away from alcohol the entire series except for one bender after Diane left him. You can still have alcoholic characters, but it's nice to at least acknowledge it. Overall the writing is very gimmicky but has its moments (Two beavers are better than one is an awesome song)

I read an interview with the show creators a couple weeks back, and they said that while Ted's kids' mother would be revealed this season, the show would go on, and things would spin in a wildly new direction and audiences would realize why Ted's had so much trouble finding true love (or something like that). That made me think that maybe the big reveal will be that Ted turns out to be gay, and the mother ends up being a surrogate or something

It seems like it's getting into the trap that all comedy shows about a group of friends gets into around Season 6-7, in which everyone gets all baby-crazy and all the plots are hackneyed drivel about how crazy it is to be pregnant/have a pregnant significant other, how sad it is that the one cast member can't get pregnant, how the character who is the last one you'd imagine wanting a child has a startling revelation that he/she wants a baby, etc. How I Met Your Mother has handled it better than Scrubs did, for example, but it's still there. At least they didn't do an episode in which Lily is raging at Marshall to go fetch her various increasingly wacky cravings, and Marshall is afraid to refuse for fear of Lily's "pregancy rage."

The first four seasons of HIMYM were fantastic. Extremely watchable, funny as hell about 83% of the time, and with a lot of heart. Then, the 5th season happened where they turned everybody into cartoonish versions of themselves, bungled up a potential goldmine of a story arc (Robin and Barney stumbling into something of a relationship could've generated a lot of laughs, but they wrote it so terribly), and just will not stop with going to the Robin/Ted well). You got problems when your most likable character is Ted, whose easily the biggest douche on the show (that's what happened in season 5). It improved in Season 6 to watchable but still subpar.
This season is frustrating and very up and down. But there's still time to go.
I'm glad HIMYM got some love, however.
