Alas, poor Yorick, Megaporn is taken down (new window).

2012-02-03 10:51:36 AM
Given the amount of Modern Warfare 3 that guy had been playing, I doubt he even remembers what a female is.

Those "female inmates" aren't females, bub.

The court case on this guy is going to be amusing. I hope they dig back into all the dirt from his time with those European companies.

2012-02-03 11:27:20 AM
Yeah, why would female criminals cozy up to a guy who, for the moment anyways, has lots and lots of money?

I tried to find a GIS picture of Dotcom that didn't make him look like a professional basement dweller. I failed.

Extraditing this guy to the U.S. is bullshiat. Why do you have to follow U.S. law if you don't live there? If they don't want his servers in the U.S. then shut down his servers in the U.S.

The protocols were invented in the U.S. but that doesn't give the U.S. ownership or jurisdiction over foreign infrastructure, hardware, or software that uses those protocols.

I'm not surprised he's afraid of advances from females. With all the time he's spent online, he probably assumes they're really fat 40-something men with creepy fetishes.

I'm still curious if one of the legal farkers can clarify things.

Isn't there some plausible deniability in the fact that MU was pretty much just a "upload it with whatever filename you want" place and would strip out downloads that were notified about? I know a few times I'd heard people on forums mention their download link was bad cause it got removed.

Semi offtopic but I don't quite see why the person is in jail.

Allegedly there was money laundering, drugs and all kinds of other crap going on besides the piracy charges.

Here's (new window) a quick rundown of why he's screwed. Including...

The indictment even includes chat logs with conversations between company executives, which include statements like: "we have a funny business . . . modern days pirates :)"

among other stuff. Here's (new window) the full indictment. I scanned it last time the story was brought up. Page 30 or so is when it starts to get bad for them. Long story short, they're screwed.

If you pull the guy's wiki, he basically has a history of fraud, insider trading, and money laundering at bunch of different companies. Hence why when he came to New Zealand (before this current mess) he was denied citizenship.

It seems like the Feds were really on him for all the offenses mentioned above and someone realized "Hey that anti piracy law gives us an easy in to grab the servers and get evidence."

If the money laundering, drugs and so on, was what it was all about, why take down a website he happens to own? Surely if that was taken down and the contents selectively copied for evidence, that suggests it was about either piracy (which would suggest the site was ignoring DMCA takedowns presumably), or child porn that wasn't been taken down when the site was notified about it (seems more likely given the FBI has been a lot more involved/active on that front).

From what I read on Ars Technica, employees blew it on plausible deniability by downloading / trading pirated stuff themselves, IMing about how much of their stuff was pirated, etc.

They outsourced some of their storage to Virginia. After that, the Feds had them.

What's puzzling is that Germany has collectively despised the guy for at least a decade since he was convicted of embezzlement, insider trading and cost well over 200 people their jobs. He gets trashed endlessly in the German media so he leaves for Thailand, New Zealand, etc.

Yet large swaths of Americans seem to deify the guy online like he's some kind of pirate-hero. It's utterly bizarre.

It's a set of agreements in place between countres that allow for extradition. A sort of tit-for-tat. If he broke laws in the US, then he can be tried here. Doesn't matter where his house is.

O RLY?

Richard O'Dwyer's website, TV Shack, provided links to other websites where users could access content but did not host any of the content itself. (new window)

Was he did was legal in the UK, but he's being extradited to the US without having services hosted in the US.

So....UK citizens are beholden to laws in a country they aren't citizens, don't reside in, or have services running there.

Welcome to the globalization nirvana. We're all slaves to corporations no matter where we live.
