Haka: a sidewalk merchant in Boston.

On a group of what? And who says "an high school"?

Oddly... Remembering the story from before, I'm okay with this. They were blocking the only exit and were acting oddly and possibly aggressively.

If you've ever worked crowd control for a large event.. Trust me, that's a nightmare waiting to happen.

2012-02-03 10:56:47 AM
So.. what is a haka?

What the hell is a Haka and how can you not say what it is in an article like that.

What a surprise. People in Roosevelt, Utah don't know what a haka is.

These inbred Mormonic dipshiats barely know what snow is, and they live in the mountains.

"Well, I dunno what's goin' on, so let's start sprayin' 'n' beatin' 'em. They're brown, anyway."

Utah sucks.

The haka is a war dance designed to intimidate (perfect for sporting events, really...).

The dance you posted is...well...let's just say "not intimidating" and leave it at that.

Too silly to be threatening.

Love the haka. I think we need to work it into the NFL.

I dunno, I think I saw a group of them in distress one time. They were running around shouting "mayday! mayday!"

Here's the incident in question. While the haka could be viewed as intimidating, the police did wait a good 3-4 seconds before hitting them with the mace.

They were blocking the only exit from the stadium and disobeyed a clear and direct order to move. Pepper spray was too much, but I have no problem with arresting them. I think pepper spray is overused and should require much more justification, but under current guidelines, these officers did nothing wrong.

I watched the video. The kids were assholes for not moving.

They banned this at the Winter Olympics. There used to be a competition called the Haka Luge.

I have to agree with this approach. Tell the kids "You're blocking the exit, move". When they don't, detain whoever seems to be the ringleader/mouthiest of the bunch refusing to move. If the crowd does not disperse, repeat as needed.

Now if the crowd rushes you, then by all means pepper spray away. As it stands though while the kids were being dumb, they didn't do anything to merit that level of force response.

You can't expect "New Cops" to be physical unless chemical weapons are used. They have high school diplomas.

FTA: "I have seen a riot firsthand and know how dangerous they can be in an instant," Butterfield said. "No more force was used than was necessary to defuse the situation."

Considering that it wasn't a riot, and zero force was necessary to defuse the situation... you sure that's what you want to say officer?

Come on, Samoan Mormons. I'm sure the missionaries were quite specific on what parts of the culture wouldn't be welcomed in Utah. Did you really expect to get to wear shiny underwear under a grass skirt?

just like the kid they killed last night in the bronx. Oh noes he was flushing weed, I better shoot an unarmed kid

the police killed a kid over a small bag of f-ing weed. In what world does that make any sense at all.

You mean none? The amount of force used was none?

Yeah because there are absolutely no Polynesians in UT where this could have ever been seen before...your anti-mormon bias is getting the best of what little objectivity you may have had.

More than likely a few Roosevelt's finest had kids playing against a team with a high number of Polynesians and decided to help their odds with a little professionalism.

so "no clue, no foul" is now a valid plea?

I guess the Polynesiians learned something about American Culture. You're not allowed to preempt the marching band on the field without maybe asking someone first. Home field rules...

I see the officer tell them to move back, and then see them sliding backward while continuing the haka. They obeyed, they just didn't break from their dance.

Let freedom reign.
If you listen closely you can almost hear the cops whisper "go back where you came from" as they spray.

Amazing. Well, in the cops defense, they were brown and behaving in an intimidating manner, the two cornerstones of the Haka.

This is total BS ... The LDS faith is the single largest religion in Polynesia and the Church owns and operates the Polynesian Cultural Center in HI, the largest paid tourist attraction in the Islands, where the haka is performed many times per day. There is not a ward in the Church where there are not several experiences haka dancer. My son, from Idaho, worked there and haka'd for 4 years. (he's not Polynesian, but looks like one)

Actually, the funny thing is that BYU football has done a haka since 2005. It was started by a Maori kid on their football team.

\Turns out BYU has a Hawaiian campus, so they end up with a surprising number of Pacific Islanders at their main campus, too.
\\Convincing people to move from Hawaii to Utah is a real trick.
