How about ten million total?

Layer Cake deserves the top spot on that list.

Wow. Snatch was made for $10 million?

Who else stared at Christina Ricci's tits for a good minute and a half?

Anyone? Anyone?

PainInTheASP: Layer Cake deserves the top spot on that list.

Yeah.

Also some of those movies cheated. Sorry but you don't get to call your movie a low budget art house film if actors and actress who make 15-20 million a film are doing your movie for free because of your last name or people you know. Not saying it's a bad thing just dont try and blow smoke up or arses.

The sad part about a the sci-fi ones is that movies like Monster, Take Shelter, and to a lesser extent Moon show how terrible modern CGI is when they have a $150 million budget and just want it to look cool.

I think Snatch served as the Matthew Vaughan/Guy Ritchie London Underworld entry on the list.

There are some really good films on there, but a couple I'd add:

Requiem for a Dream (2000) - $4.5 million
The Man From Earth (2007) - $200,000

Yeah, it was too old to be included. And though I thought it was hilarious at the time, Clerks would be a youtube video today. Kevin Smith was really in the right place at the right time.

No it dosent. It was a lame attempt at being a guy Ritchie fil without the charm. The whole movie is about a schmuck who gets beaten up for doing nothing, and gets killed by another schmuck.

We salute 50 of the finest contemporary films with budgets of less than $10million. Did your favourite make the list...?

You mentioned Blair Witch in the list. I'm not sure you fully understand what "finest contemporary films" actually means.

Ironic that the picture they chose to illustrate Bowling For Columbine is one of the faked shots. In that picture can you see a cameraman behind Moore? So when it cuts to the same scene shot from behind Moore where was that cameraman? And why can't you now see the cameraman in front of Moore who must have been there to shoot this frame?

Moore faked it. In this exact shot he is talking to no one, Heston had already left. He's acting, to no one. This is more than just inserting reaction shots in an interview, this is faking Heston's entire reaction to something that didn't happen, Moore showing him the girls picture.

Catfish was easily the worst movie I saw all year.

Good god, people actually liked that drivel?

Outside of that, decent list. I don't think Moon was the best and Primer probably should have been a bit higher.

The Descent was sort of lame, but meh.

And, yeah, Virgin Suicides was good.

I have always had a problem with Kids. It seemed to me it was shot in a way adults wanted to see kids. It seemed to have put them in the worst light. I still also remember Madonna having a press conference or something telling parents. See this movie these ae your children. Yeah if my folks saw it they would have clamped down on me until graduation. And the kids in it seemed like dbags anyways.

yes. I thought it was a good list thought, except that stupid coffin movie with Ryan Reynolds. that sucked in a boring fashion. Definitely writhing some of these down to watch though. Any suggestions for the rarer ones on the list?

I don't think documentaries should be on the list, no scripts, no actors, just a couple of cameras sound guys and a premiss. If you spend over 10 million you are doing it wrong.

Most good movies are done on the cheap. The shiat for the mouth breathers are what cost so much.

Spurlock examines the issues about obesity, and the way McDonalds profits from it, without ever being boring. Watching the physical and mental effects it has on him is fascinating, and makes you admire Spurlock's bravery and tenacity in taking on the project.

Hero tag for Morgan Spurlock, that brave warrior.

Leo Fitzpatrick said random strangers on the street started screaming at him after the movie was released. Maybe they thought it was a documentary. It did sorta have that feel.

Saw Second Earth a couple of weeks ago. Was surprised, was a pretty good flick, imho. Good take on the "big doors swing on little hinges" thing

If you can call killing a kid while dwi a "little hinge", but I digress

soopey: Never heard of Moon before this. Is it good? I might have to find a used copy on amazon and watch it.

Yes, it actually is that good.

I also really liked Monsters and Another Earth.

2012-02-03 02:08:20 PM
Monsters is a horrible sci-fi film and a horrible road movie and a horrible love story. Combine the three in a low-budget shiat-blender, and the sum of the parts equals blended shiat.

There is not a single redeeming value I can think of with regard to it...maybe the cinematography of Mexico and Central America? I actually fell asleep during it and that says a lot since I never, ever fall asleep during movies.

Don't know how much it cost to make, but 'The Sweet Hereafter' by Atom Egoyan will haunt you for years.

Glad to see Brick, Memento and Submarine on the list. If you don't know who Richard Ayoade is, he was Moss in The IT Crowd.

Here folks, I'll even bold it for you:

In this age of multi-million dollar blockbusters and eye-watering fees paid to some actors, you may forget we're in an age of austerity. However, for the vast majority of the film industry, there is no huge vat of money, nor has there ever been. But this hasn't stopped some of the finest films of recent years being made on a relative shoe-string, and in some cases, quite literally with a shoe-string.

I reckon filmmaking thrives at the sharp end, and low budgets mean more creative ideas, and as a result, more engaging films. To prove this, here is a list of what I consider to be the finest 50 contemporary films made for under $10 million. There is a breathtaking array of recognisable genre pictures in here, too, with budgets rangin from $10 million down to as little as $7000.

A few caveats before we start, though - contemporary is defined by being the last 15 years, so we've only chosen films made between 1997 and the present. The film must be English language, and must have had a theatrical release. So no matter how good your mate Dave's film was, it's not going in. Sorry Dave.

We've also put the generally agreed budget beneath each film, although without being directly involved with their making, there's no way to know precisely how much money was invested.

Fark that. He's an anti-corporate hipster.

McDonald's does not and has never marketed itself as a place to eat for every single meal every day, nor as healthy eating either. If anything, they see themselves as a treat.

Spurlock is a tool in the Moore mold: bend/change the facts to support your POV.
