Also not sure what an "unregisterable" firearm is. If it has had the serial number altered or removed it sounds bad.

I was mostly being facetious. However, "unlawful use of a weapon" is what they charge people with for transporting a gun in Chicago. "Unregisterable" means that IL has a ban on "assault rifles," which is basically anything with a clip. Those two really shouldn't be crimes. Also, I don't smoke pot, but possession shouldn't be a crime either.

Having the gun loaded while you drive around is really the worst offense here. And yes, if you're smoking pot, stay home.

Really, the guy should get sentenced to a drug rehab and gun safety course. Unfortunately, he'll probably be in prison for a long time.
