I wonder if that plane was used in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
That would be pretty neat.

Laugh if you must, but the IL-2 was one of the most badass planes of WW2. Quite littrally a flying tank, it was easily the most effective ground attack aircraft of its time. Its heavy armament made it very effective against German armored vehicles, especially tanks, while it's armor plating and general robustness made it very difficult to shoot down. Sort of WW2's equivalent of today's A-10 Warthog.

Witness: Striker was the squadron leader. He brought us in real low. But he couldn't handle it.
Prosecutor: Buddy couldn't handle it? Was Buddy one of your crew?
Witness: Right. Buddy was the bombardier. But it was Striker who couldn't handle it, and he went to pieces.
Prosecutor: *Andy* went to pieces?
Witness: No. Andy was the navigator. He was all right. Buddy went to pieces. It was awful how he came unglued.
Prosecutor: *Howie* came unglued?
Witness: Oh, no. Howie was a rock, the best tailgunner in the outfit. Buddy came unglued.
Prosecutor: And he bailed out?
Witness: No. Andy hung tough. Buddy bailed out. How he survived, it was a miracle.
Prosecutor: Then Howie survived?
Witness: No, 'fraid not. We lost Howie the next day

Why did they take it apart? Fly the damn thing. Its Paul Allen, so expense isn't an issue and the airplane was pieced together, so its not like its all original. If its airworthy, you gotta fly it.

It's a single engine aircraft with a relative short range of only 450 miles. Not the sort of thing you normally try to fly across the Atlantic.

Vintage Russian Fighter? The hipsters in Seattle must be ecstatic over how that will go with their skinny jeans and PBR cans. Just to be ironic, of course.
/unless of course they were into Vintage Russian Fighters before it was cool.

The only one of its kind that flies.
Produced in large quantities.
Assembled from parts retrieved from wrecks.

They had better have something in that rear canopy gun that prevents it from being aimed at the tail or it'll be an "Indy, they got us!" type scenario

I live right near Paine Field (done deliberately because I'm a pilot and there's also a golf course here) and when it's clear (today) either the Flying Heritage Collection or the Historic Flight Collection have warbirds up all afternoon. Nothing like the sound of radial engines.
Oh, and Paul Allen already had Soviet attack planes here in the collection.

It's amazing how few of these WWII planes are left. Thousands, in some cases tens of thousands of each of these planes were built, and now there are only a handful of them left, and even fewer of them fly..

Its in Tacoma, off the ship. I'm pretty sure it was shipped across the Pacific. I can understand not wanting to fly it into the us during the winter into Alaska, but now that its in the states....

It was assembled and tested in Novosibirsk, which is smack dab in the middle of Russia. The shortest route to Washington State would be to fly it over the pole, if you could. You could fly it across Siberia, assuming you've got places to land, refuel, and perform the proper maintenance along the way, then fly it across the Bering Strait to Alaska, then down to Washington State.
The problem with that idea, though, is that the support just isn't there.
In lots of areas of eastern Russia, avgas isn't available

They would have flown it across the Pacific but didn't have a freshman to pee in the radiator.
