He hosts his own little event. I bet he rakes in the gamer girls to his table with his mad nerd cred. He could probably get it wet any night of the week. Getting rid of the insane hickies from fat chicks who learned about sex from watching porn instead of practice may take more time.

Right? When I was in college I used to go "board game night" every saturday until 10 or so when it closed down. The bars and parties didn't really pick up until after then anyway.

Exactly. It really speaks to the larger issue of people being so self conscious about being labelled as 'something'. People are complex and can enjoy any number of activities without feeling like they aren't being true to their 'group'. Yes; I can play sports, go play a board game, watch a movie about a cyborg hunter from the future and then go out to the club.

One hobby/activity doesn't define who you are.

For newbies, I can recommend these:
Settlers of Catan (new window) is great, but only up to four players.
Ticket to ride (new window) is a really good game, it has a US map, too.
Carcassone (new window) is really nice and well thought out.

And for the HC players:
Eclipse (new window) is really nice and epic space strategy. Like master of orion, but on a table and with lots of back-stabbing.
Power grid (new window) is fun game of... power grids and plants. You get to be Mr. Burns :)

My family is a massive board game playing bunch. We've played a wide number of Catan expansions (you can get one to play with up to 6 people), plus Carcassonne, and Dominion is our new game of choice.

A very quick two-player game once you get the hang of it is Lost Cities. You and your opponent play cards to represent progress on one of five expeditions. Each expedition you start on has an initial cost, so if you're not careful, you could lose points going into the sea, but you might hit it big in the jungle.

Another "beginner" game that I got for my birthday and would recommend is "Incan Gold". The basic setup is that all the players are exploring an ancient temple. As you go deeper into the temple, the group discovers gold and treasure and splits it amongst themselves. If you want to call it quits, you keep what you've got, but if you stay in too long, you lose it all. Repeat for five rounds, and see who has the highest score.

If you enjoy and your family/friends enjoy board games sure. Perhaps get a couple of cheap wallpapering tables and try some table top war games as well maybe?

I'm a huge board game collector myself. Agricola is okay, but Caylus a significantly better game overall. The main advantage of Agricola over Caylus is the games tend to be more varied due to the cards you play with change every game. But, if you follow the directions and draw the cards randomly, people can get absurd combinations and win easily just from the cards (way too much luck). So you need to distribute the cards in another way with less randomness to make it work. Caylus the game-to-game variety comes not from randomness (of which there is NONE in the game essentially) but from very clever design.

For games with minimal rules, Blokus will give you the most fun/strategy even thought it essentially only has one rule. Settlers sucks. Carcassonne is awesome.

my brother has ever version of risk ever created, I own about 30 board games and I have a friend with over 100. Board games are a great way to pass the time and when you run out of the standard boardgames you find some pretty awesome ones.

My person favorites from my collection in no particular order;

-Scotland Yard
-Axis and Allies (pain in the ass to actually play so not often played)
-Red Dragon Inn
-The Hobbit adventure board game
-Balderdash (pretty much lets know which of your friends is or isn't a dumbass)
-I just bought a Dungeons and Dragons game called 'the Legend of Drizzt' I've only played it once but it was a lot of fun

duffblue: Is risk worth picking up?

The new version is IMO they changed the rules slightly to make for faster gameplay and faster wins, classic risk can take hours to play and when you get that invested into a game it really pisses you off when an ally stabs you in the back.

Also for super risk nerds there is risk legacy in which every game alters the board and pieces permanently. Yes it's a crappy marketing ploy to make you replace the game every so often but it's pretty fun if you like risk.

Also check out Risk:Godstorm it's risk set in ancient earth complete with a sinkable Atlantis and battling for the underworld.

Most of these games sound complicated while drinking. People play games while sober?

Red Dragon Inn is basically a card based drinking game, and hilarious when you take real drinks every time your player is forced to drink.

My current board game I'm fascinated with is Mr. Jack. It's just a really interesting 2 player game, where one player is trying to figure out which piece the other player is through deduction. The basic rules of the game are probably simpler to pick up than chess (The eight pieces each have a different special move), but the mind games that occur between the two players with regards to bluffing, and double-bluffing is great.

Of course the best game ever is Fiasco. Even though it's technically a role playing game, it's really more of a party game scrambled with an improv game.
