From TFA:It makes one wonder if even Sally Morgan believes that Sally Morgan's powers are real.

Of course she doesn't. Like all psychics, she knows full well that she is a scam artist and a fraud.

As a True Psychic™ I predict that this thread will have a number of posts of each of the following:

- claims that the JREF's tests are bunk and they change the rules in order to make sure Real Psychics™ can't pass
- anecdotal claims of psychic experiences either directly personal or from a friend
- unrelated pictures of Mila Kunis
- realization that due to my phrasing, my predictions are all perfectly correct

/I will happily give any of you a psychic reading of your future in exchange for money! :D

On one hand, I have no sympathy for people that fall for this crap. I think of it as the same as the people who gamble, knowing that they are essentially spending the money for a night of entertainment (I disagree, but I get it).
One the other hand, making fun of psychics is fun.

Psychics are real because once after my mother died I and several other people gathered our anecdotes and created data tables and performed a meta-analyses which showed there was a statistical significance between people willing to call themselves psychic and other people willing to believe that bullsh*t.

The sad/frustrating/irritating thing about people like her is that if there really are people with psychic abilities, or if it is an ability we are capable of developing, nonsense like these scam-artists will make people that can actually do it far more likely to stick to the shadows and never actually use it.

Which would be a damn shame.

I knew a creepy guy named Frank in California that used to pretend to be a palm reader/psychic to pick up women at parties (it never worked).

I got sick of his shiat because it creeped out the women. So one night, while he was "reading" some girl's palm I walked up and said, "I can tell the future, too. You're gonna hate Frank in about five minutes."

I highly doubt that. For example, if I actually had psychic abilities (which I DO, as has been well proven by the accuracy of my predictions up there in the second post of this thread), then I would certainly use them to my advantage, probably by using them to woo my way into Ms. Kunis's pants.

And, I would do that right after I collected the $1million from the for proving my abilities. :p

Yes but you could probably woo your way into Ms Kunis's pants (that is the best use for this power) in a non-public way, without revealing yourself. AND you could use your powers to make money without needing to take public money from people trying to discredit you. Probably!

I have no doubt that there are people who honestly believe they have some sort of "psychic" abilities based on the various ways we trick ourselves into forgetting all the times we DIDN'T know who it was on the phone when we answered and our dreams DIDN'T come true the next day; and these people need something to make themselves special or something to explain the weirdness of life. And for whatever reason rational explanations just don't answer their needs the way "being psychic" does.

That said, I equally have no doubt that people who go on TV or otherwise do it for the money are among those people, and are nothing but cold-hearted scammers, viciously exploiting others' weaknesses for profit. People who think they're "psychic" because they "know things" sometimes are fine; people who go on TV to help people make contact with their loved ones who have Passed Beyond are beneath contempt.

I think she should sue the Huffington Post for putting the word "Psychic" in quotation marks. And while she's at it, I guess she should sue me now too.

I've had plenty of what I think of as "spiritual" experiences in my life. I think all of us have to figure things out on our own... To me life is a balance of being objective and open-minded. I tend to lean towards thinking that we are definitely more than our physical bodies - and I see consciousness as more energy than brain.

That being said, I think there are some frauds out there, but there are also some very gifted mediums as well. I've had contact with a couple, and in one of the readings that was more for my mother and not for me (her mom had passed a few years prior, and I was already having experiences of my own), the medium said a few things to me that no one else could know. I didn't exactly wear a t-shirt that said I'm an abstract artist - and this dude (after speaking to my mom briefly in a group setting) came up to me at random and started telling me about these paintings I was doing. I was impressed, and this is not information that a person can just guess about other people and be right most of the time. It was very specific. It was a very brief reading, and not much more info was passed, so it was hard to tell how gifted he was.

I think the only real way to know for sure, if you've had someone you care about that has passed, is to experience a reputable medium firsthand. That is the only way to know for sure, rather than from opinions from other people. When a medium delivers highly specific information that only you are family would know, it is a pretty profound experience. Believe it or not - the universe IS a mysterious place, and we don't know very much about it. Human beings are pretty damn ignorant. I think we can all agree on that.

There's a bloke at U of A - Dr. Gary R. Habermas, that was testing the accuracy of mediums for a while. I am not sure if he is still doing that or not.

Also - if we really are more than our physical bodies, than all of us are "psychic". I never use that word. I prefer spiritual intelligence. These are just my opinions - people should think for themselves, question authority - and question the opinions of other people.

OOBE Juan Kenobi: - and question the opinions of other people.

I somehow don't think you really want your opinion questioned. I would guess the Weeners would be "hey, I know what I heard"

The thing is, most people are not actually good at hearing what is actually said. People are also remarkably poor at recalling just what they said, and in what order things were said. I've seen it done, by people that were quite clear that they were doing a cold read. A cold read also becomes much easier when you have at least one enthusiastic participant that has a lot of information.

It is handy to video record a reading. It is very revealing. Good training for people plying this craft.

Of COURSE she knows she's a fake. The terms of JREF are very simple and honest. They ask for nothing more than doing specifically what you claim you can do. They never required perfection or unreasonable conditions, only that the test be under controlled conditions which don't conflict with the claim and that the result is beyond the accuracy which can be explained by chance. There's no need for complex "gotcha" rules hidden in the proposal; because fundamentally these psychics can never do what they say and this is hardly a battle.

She turned it down because she knows she can never do it. Plain and simple.

Exactly the opposite, actually. Experiences are not great for knowledge. Repeated observations are better. We do science for knowing with a reasonable degree of certainty.

Psychics do not exist. Want to convince me psychics exist? Get me some documented evidence.

Where the hell are psychics right before a major world event? Why aren't they saying anything? This is the million dollar question. John Edward was on Larry King Live on September 10, 2001. Why didn't he warn people about the impending terrorist attack? What the fark good is an "ability" like that if you're not going to do anything for the betterment of humanity?

a little bit of luck and some context. dropouts are the most likely bombers on campus. That's just good statistics. so, just guess the race and off you go. If she had gotten the race wrong, you wouldn't have bothered to remember that detail. Confirmation bias.

so... perhaps you don't win very much. Not Charlie Sheen.

I'd say 3/10.

If psychic powers were real, surely one would have gone into a field other than paranormal buffoonery. A psychic batter would never strike out, a psychic weather man would always be right and a psychic security guard would be unbreakable.

If your mom had walked around campus she probably was amazed at all the Asian students.

So, amateur bomb goes off on campus.......
