Exactly. They can't get much younger than Smith.

The Doctor is living in reverse, it seems. Every regeneration, he's older but appears to be a little younger.

Each regeneration knocks X number of years off their physical appearance. Since The Doctor is going through regenerations faster than he can break them in, it makes sense that he keeps getting younger with each one.

Colin Baker was older than Peter Davison.

Davison was a bit of an aberration. He was the youngest Doctor up to that point, probably in reaction to Tom Baker hanging around so long.

Otherwise, they kept the Doctors in their late-40s to early-50s after Hartnell left, then with the introduction of Tom Baker, the Doctor was pretty much in his late-30s to early-40s until Tennant.

With the exception of Davison, the age of the actor playing the Doctor has decreased over time, until the big jump from Tennant to Smith.

Unless they go for a real babyface playing an old man for #12, I would expect to see the next actor be older than Smith. Or, hell, female. I dunno.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: How about we NOT change Doctors every 2-3 years! How about that!

that's actually not that unusual. If you look at the first seven Doctors, the only ones who really went longer than 3 series were Pertwee (5) and Tom Baker (7).
Although to be fair, both Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy's tenures were rather rudely cut short. No telling how long they would have stayed on otherwise.

Charlie Brooker as the Doctor. Oh, you look at me like I'm an idiot now, and you'll look at me like an idiot if it ever happens because it would be terrible. But epic, at the same time.

The actors would need to want to stay in the role and that's not going to happen. And Peter Davidson stated no one should stay longer than 3 years.

Interesting to see Rupert Grint's name tossed about. In a similar conversation, someone suggested to me that Daniel Radcliffe could make a good Doctor in a few years time once he's older and perhaps pushing 30. Thought it was a very interesting prospect at the time. I think either of them could make a good Doctor.

2012-02-02 09:49:03 PM
I would rather have an older Doctor next, but the powers that be at the BBC would never let that happen.

2012-02-02 09:50:27 PM
Every one of the actors playing the role in the revived series has their good points but I think it's time to get away from the young hip actors for a while - personally I'd like to see them go older. Ff he hadn't already been in the show I'd say Anthony Stewart Head would be my choice for 13. In any case, someone with that sort of vibe would be ideal IMO.

2012-02-02 09:51:29 PM
So at this point, Matt Smith's Doctor lived for 200 to 300 years between the beginning of the latest season and the end of the latest season, right?

And he's had his full lifetime worth of River Song complete with Jim the Fish and all that (and Amy's a world famous celebrity model/perfume designer?)

Just trying to keep things straight

/until the fall of the 11th

I think he will drift older. Next Doctor would probably be mid-30s. I'd still love it to be Patterson Joseph (who was in the running this time around), although I'd never be able to watch the show without going, "That's Numberwang!"

The final scene of Caves of Androzani wasn't exactly Colin Baker's first appearance in Doctor Who.

And when Lalla Ward took over as Romana, they even used the excuse that Romana liked the way Princess Astra looked, so she used her form for her regeneration.

Doctor Who?

I thought i was watching River Song and her Time Traveling Family of Wonder...

And seriously -- fark grint and radcliffe, Either one would piss me off enough to keep me from watching. Emma Watson would be even worse.

DW pisses me off -- its great 20% of the time and its a sloppy nerd wank fest 80% of the time.

It took me a bit to realize that the good 20% wasnt worth what equated to overhearing a science fiction writer trying to blow himself in the next room over.

You forgot truly awful sets, props and special effects 100% of the time. Seriously, their budget must suck hard, that shiat is at least 15 years behind us tv shows. Hell, even Lexx had better sets and effects.

Sorry to be rude, but you're imagining things. My wife follows a Doctor Who group on Facebook, and everyone thinks he'd be a good choice - especially the women. If I remember correctly, a few people in the group were talking about starting a letter-writing campaign.

No, Alan Rickman is not too old. Sir Patrick Stewart _is_ too old, and that's too bad. So too, is Sir Ian McKellan.

No, no it didn't. Go back and watch that crap again. I tried, and the effects, acting, and story are just atrocious. The only reason I ever tried watching it back in the day was the hope Xev or Zev would get naked.

Well, no, of course he's not actually too old to play the Doctor (nor are Patrick Stewart or Ian McKellan), but none of them fit the criteria "cooler, younger Doctor". Benedict Cumberbatch at least comes pretty close.

Actually, a child DR would make for an interesting change. Even if just for half a season with a death and a regen at the end. Especially with the death and regen.
