Hey, you could force a trade and then you wouldn't have to pay!

//same rules everyone else has followed - you don't remember Ochocinco?
///I like how he has no reason for changing his number, either

So let's see....the NFL is changing from Reebok to Nike, which basically means those jerseys are last year's junk, and basically a burden and he should have to buy? Yeah, that's a scam. I would be annoyed if I had one of his older jerseys, but it literally costs the various parties nothing for him to make this change now.

Is that really a rule? I'm surprised the NFLPA was willing to agree to have that in a CBA.

MLBPA, arguably the strongest of the players unions, agreed to that this recent CBA, so it doesn't surprise me at all that NFLPA.. one of the weakest, would.

Somebody needs a new agent.

shouldn't that be less since there switching over to nike in the fall?

Ochocinco was told the same thing when he changed his name but he changed it in the off season and didn't have to pay. Is that the case with Peterson as well? Or did Ochocinco still have to pay the money? If he did I guess I missed the report. If Ochocinco didn't pay then there really is no difference in the two circumstances and Peterson shouldn't have to pay.

Changing a jersey whether it be a name or number means that the old is useless (in the Reebok's eyes of course) and they would be out either way. Or, I may just be thinking about this the wrong way.

so adrian peterson is a whiny little brat. very not surprising.

I'm wondering why Reebok has $1m of AP merch sitting around? Even at $100 per item, that's 10000 units already made with no buyers. What the fark, Reebok?

Ochocinco had to keep his original name on the back of his jersey for an extra year after the name change to avoid having to pay Reebok.

He would have to buy the remaining inventory if he changed his number right now. If he waits until the Reebok/NFL contract runs out (which happens in a week or two) he doesn't have to pay a dime. Nike has already stated that players will be allowed to change their numbers since their is no remaining Nike merchandise to buy up.

But only if the NFL agrees.
Apparently they aren't.

He should ask for a change of address, since he'll never win a Super Bowl in Minnesota.

Is it only because Nike is taking it over next year? Because it seems like changing your number would be a good way to get people who already bought your Jersey to buy another one.

this guy should be more worried about wins instead of the number on his back.

This shiat is out of whack. If the team decides a player can switch numbers, it shouldn't have to answer to a company trying to make $ on merchandise. But, I guess that's the world we live in.

And, AP sounds like a whiny douche here.

Non-story, this is standard NFL operating procedure. When Chad Johnson wanted to change his last name he had to go through the same deal.

2012-02-03 02:24:50 PM
I think if he wanted to actually get people on his side, he'd at least make up a good story for why he wanted a different number. Instead he talked about having reasons for his current number and another number...but not either of the numbers he was talking about switching to. He just sounds retarded (not to mention whiny).

It's the deal the NFL has with the manufacturers of the jerseys. There's a period before every season where a player is allowed to change jerseys without penalty. After that, it's not fair to Reebok/Nike to change your number making a million dollars of product they just bought worthless.

I'm not sure why he's getting all upset about it now because even if Reebok was still the uniform distributor, he would have the opportunity to change his number prior to next season like everyone else. Plus Nike has already said that anyone can change numbers once their contract starts. Seems someone at Reebok is making a last ditch effort to squeeze some remaining cash out of their contract that is about to expire.

Not worthless! I buy them at huge discounts and have an instant throwback jersey.

Plus, who cares if it's fair to Reebok? Nobody gives a shiat if it's fair to the average joe, who bought that shirt.

You think this would be a good thing.

I mean look at me, I bought a Roethlisberger jersey when he was a rookie and I only wear the thing on game day when I can watch, so it is still in great condition. I have no reason to buy another jersey even though it has been about 7 years. If Ben changes his number I would have to go something like 5+ years wearing an outdated jersey, which I have always hated until it gets old enough from a good franchise player or era to invoke nostalgia.

Peterson is a popular player and still very young in his career, you would think there would be a temporary increase in sales from new buyers that would offset the lost inventory.

The Chad Johnson point doesn't make the sense that everyone is trying to make of it. He legally changed his name. He didn't put his nickname on there. That's his name now. You people sound stupid.

dmars: Peterson is a popular player and still very young in his career,

Well, no he's not. He's already probably past his peak, in fact. He has 2-3 good years left and he's done.
