Let guess, these rules will be enforced by Congress itself. Pointless posturing. Retired Congressmen are beyond the reach of ethics committees.

2012-02-02 06:56:59 PM
Freshman Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) offered an amendment that would require former congressmen to forfeit their federal pension and insurance plans if they become lobbyists after retiring from Capitol Hill. Not to be outdone, freshman Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) offered an amendment that would impose a lifetime ban on lawmakers ever becoming federal lobbyists.

an amendment that would require lawmakers to reveal all mortgage information on every property they own. Another proposal prohibits bonuses to senior executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

a bill formally making it illegal to trade stocks based on private information obtained from one's position on Capitol Hill.

Holy shiat, I have the biggest ethics boner right now.

Reid said on the Senate floor, begging his colleagues to finalize their amendments. "What am I supposed to do?"

Pass every single goddamned one of them.

Meh, election year broo ha ha. I figure most people up for re-election are a bit worried about losing their cush little job because the people are restless. We'll see how far this goes.

Congress' approval ratings are far enough in the tank this might actually pass. I'm amazed.

So, does this shiny new ethics law affect all the lawmakers who recently retired to take lobbyist positions, or do they still get to wield their influence in the halls of congress? That is what I'd like to know. No grandfathering lobbyists in on this one.

/one case where ex post facto provisions should not apply

Hell NO! I am impressed but honestly looking for the final caveat that says something to the extent of "The aforementioned is invalid on days that end in 'y'."

Since it is up to congress to enforce this I'm guessing this will apply to no one.

My boss used to be a lineman for FPL. Drinking wasn't a red flag, it was part of the job description.

I know this is ludicrously cynical of me, but I think this law has no chance of passing in any form that will make a difference. Eric Cantor is already trying to amend the House version of this bill to make its prohibitions so broad that nobody will want to support them all. Besides that, the two amendments proposed by Rand Paul and Michael Bennet weren't actually voted on because Harry Reid didn't want to put them in the bill.

"These resolution will automatically expire on the first day of December 2012" I imagine will be hidden in fine print somewhere.

This has nothing to do with approval ratings. Once it goes through, the spin is going to be that all that money was attracting Congressmen who aren't called by God to perform the job. God will get all the credit for this historic wave of Doing The Right Thing on Capitol Hill, and it's going to be a major game-changer.

If these ethics amendments pass and strike down Congress's supply of dirty money, the GOP's God Card will become more powerful than we could possibly imagine. It's a trap.

I can understand maybe not the prohibition of donating to their campaign fund, but if they know what's in the blind trust, they could theoretically start working for a lobbying agency and get Congress to pass laws designed to boost the value of the blind trust. That's a conflict of interest IMO.

Good?

Run fast, run scared. These guys are worried about the next election, and rightly so. They all want to be able to say, when confronted by their opponents with ethics charges, "How can you say that? I voted for the Mea Culpa Bad Congressman Bad Act of 2012." If it means screwing over your departing staff while waiting for the uproar to die down, so be it. This will mainly affect long term reps and senators, freshman Congresspeople have other things to worry about.

You do realize House Republicans are pushing the Keystone pipeline solely because they have hundreds of thousands of dollars of their own money tied up in the US government approving the project, right? That they stand to gain massively if they vote it into existence? That members of Congress are allowed access to sensitive information and are legally allowed to use it to their advantage for insider trading? Like, say, they know they've approved a new military contract and before they put out the press release, go buy a couple thousand shares. Totally legal.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong there, not at ALL.

2012-02-02 10:53:39 PM
Who are the three tards that voted no?

Also, why do I sense that the house will have a meltdown and go in to a frothy fervor over the terrible job-killing restrictions that this bill imposes?

With congressional approval ratings in the low teens, leaders became fearful that allowing the strictest amendments to go to a vote would end up with them winning votes, because no one wanted to be on the side of defending a lawmaker's right to leave the Capitol and make millions of dollars as a lobbyist.

"FARK! Make sure those really good amendments that actually make solid improvements don't make it to the floor! They might pass! And I've got a sweet gig lined up as a lobbyist for the Pouring Crude Oil and Organic Acids On Orphans Industry Association!""

skullkrusher: hehe this is pretty awesome. Seriously, how can these farkers be allowed to invest in anything not held by a blind trust?

Not only that, but it has to be truly blind. It shouldn't be limited to simply the legislators not having control over the investments - they should have no knowledge of what is being invested in whatsoever. Don't bother with that no coordinating loophole they use for superPacs.

Hell, just simply make it a requirement of being a federal legislator that you and your spouses investment portfolios must be liquidated and the money held by a third party and give it the same rate of growth as a regular checking account.

Because we could never possibly get laws passed to get that corporate influence out of the government. Clearly, the thing to do is double down on it.
