But there's no way for Romney to know that, since he and his SuperPAC are barred from coordinating with each other.... *snicker*

All of those $5 and $10 donations that the GOP primary voters send in? Those probably just go towards petty cash and the senior advisers' bar tabs. The real money comes from guys like this:

Wait: you're telling me that Stephen Colbert's SuperPAC raised as much as RON PAUL's SuperPAC?

We need to end these PACs and we also need to end union contributions.

Better yet - bar political contributions from all unions and corporations of any type/size. You want to throw money at a politician? Do it as an individual, with your own money, speaking only for yourself.

The Gingrich graph shows only $2m from 5 donors in the biggest piece- did his PAC not get two $5m donations from Adelman? Or were these just late enough so that they didn't appear in this reporting cycle?

The fine print on the graph states that the figures represent money raised before 1/1/12. I believe that Adelman's money came after Iowa.

Well, since we've established that corporations are people, we're really just replacing one set of people with another.

I have one better on you... end ALL political donations. All federal elections would have to use public funds, and to get those public funds they have to submit a petition with at least 5% of the voters from the same election previously.

It's funny, I don't remember reading anything about superPACs in my American civics schoolbooks. Which isn't all that surprising since I wasn't taught American civics, but I doubt they appear anywhere when describing how your democracy works to the next generation of "informed" voters.

PACs and lobbying aren't covered in ANY civics classes that I know of, and most people are only vaguely aware of the role lobbyists fill in our society. Lobbyists themselves try very hard to stay off the front page (many consider publicity to be a 'kiss of death' for their career).

in and of themselves, lobbyists aren't a bad thing. the issue isn't 'lobbying', the issue is huge fricking sums of money and members of Congress (and regulatory agencies) who have come to expect massive contributions in return for favorable policy decisions. cap the amounts of money and you go a long way towards solving our problems with corruption and influencing peddling. one thing we could right away? make it all 'hard money'. no more soft money anywhere ever for anyone. it ALL gets tracked. its all 'hard money'.

my money is less on "ok" and more on "completely dwarfed by corporate contributions to the point of being a non-entity" but i don't have any figures to back that up.

I wonder what all this bribe money is for... could it be for tax breaks that specifically target them? nah that'd be class warfare and stuff and only middle class people can participate in that.

Better yet - make political commercial air time free as a public service as a condition of having an FCC license.

Then they won't need all that money.
