Just a shot in the dark, but was one of the season of "Survivor" filmed on that island? That's the only sense I can make of the headline.

Guys duh, only one person lives in Vanuatu, and since it was such a wimpy quake, he survived.

That, or it was a really lame Survivor (the reality TV show) joke.

Dear Subby,

Here at Fark, we do not watch abominations of TV shows such as Survivor. Therefore, your joke headline is not funny.

Survivor had a huge following for a bit as the 'it show', so is it safe to assume that due to its popularity, most Farkers will feign ignorance on the topic because they've deemed it uncool?

Before I found out it was a Survivor TV show joke, the best I could figure out was that subby meant the little red arrow-like thing on the map was the sole survivor.

2012-02-02 10:16:45 AM
I watched the first survivor. Haven't seen a single episode since. I don't even know what channel it's on anymore.

Subdivide "most Farkers" us into camps that include "Farkers who watched it, found the premise ridiculous and happily ignored it along with other bad television and therefore make no connection between Vanuatu and the TV show" so I have somewhere to sit.

I've never watched Survivor so didn't get the reference, but I do have an acquaintance from Vanuatu and was a bit worried for a second there. She's hardly ever home in Vanuatu anyway, so she probably wasn't there.

2012-02-02 10:20:06 AM
At least it's not too hard to find a place to bury one survivor.

The fake hipsterness is kinda moot in this case, since it was a network TV show (namely, on CBS).

Ok, Farkers, if you had to make a headline about an earthquake in Vanuatu, what would it be? and don't just say it'd be better than this. There isn't anything to say about Vanuatu except Survivor.

I live in Canada we don't get American network TV without cable unless we are close to the border.

Soooo.... pointless headline? Minor earthquake, no reported casualties or damage, no tsunami on the way, no joke in the headline... give up and go home?

Maybe I would have found it funny if reality tv didn't make me want to vomit.

2012-02-02 10:26:19 AM
I watched the first four seasons of survivor. It was fun, but I don't see how people have gone through 20 or however many seasons there have been.

No, you would not have a better headline. Neither would I.

2012-02-02 10:26:42 AM
I like a clever headline as much as the next Farker but I prefer it when the clever headlines either A) reference something that is actually worth knowing about or B) pertain to a news story that might somehow be considered important.

A headline that references something nobody ought to remember and pertains to a story that has no impact on any of our lives should at the very least be a link to something amusing that can help me procrastinate at work. But that being said, if I had a headline that I thought would get me a greenlight...I'd hit it.

I know Survivor exists, but I have no clue on where they are filmed. I don't think I have ever watched an episode on purpose. Then again, I hate 90% of all "reality" shows with the only ones I enjoy are things like Pawn Stars, American Pickers, etc.

And yes I am old, so get of my internet lawn.

Missing out on Survivor (and other reality crap on network TV) is perhaps the one time that your ridiculous "Canadian Content" regs have actually benefited anyone other than the production companies that get tax kick-backs and a captive audience of 30 million...

I just don't have time to get invested in shows. Sure I could DVR them, but I'd probably just end up never watching them.

I got it, but only because we had a Survivor in Vanatu question at my last trivia thing.

Survivor in Vanatu? Survivor, Vanatu? Survivor: Vanatu?

Oh, who the fark cares.

The Pacific island nation of Vanuatu is the happiest place on earth, according to a new "happy planet index".

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/5172254.stm

It has wonderful weather, palm trees and sun. Ocean front property is dirt cheap!

The downside is that almost all the building supplies and labor have to be transported from Australia either by plane or boat. It's pretty common for people to buy land with visions of building their dream home on the beach then finding out it's not possible without herculean effort. Apparently, the education system isn't very good at turning out people that are competent in measuring and cutting.

Except that everyone has cable since there are very few over the air broadcasts available and the basic cable package is usually a feed from all of the US networks.

It's slang for "telegram", as in "Cable Aunt Millicent and let her know I am coming on the March 18th coach".
