Alan Parsons, is that you, subby?

There is no dark side of the moon, really. As a matter of fact, it's all dark.

2012-02-02 10:31:11 AM
...and it's the sun that sets it alight.

2012-02-02 10:32:47 AM
Well, there's always a dark side of the moon, it's just always changing ... like earth. The far side of the moon is always the same though.

+1 Subby.

For you kiddies who haven't tried the whole "dark side of the moon/wizard of oz" sync yet, I'll just say that it is worth doing. But it works much better if you're completely stoned. Or so I've been told.

So where are the Transformers?

2012-02-02 10:51:07 AM
I watched the sync on Youtube. It is pretty cool, especially when the plane goes overhead.

I tried the whole synchronized thing (not stoned) and wondered what the hell everyone was smoking... but okay. I do like this headline though. I snorted a little.

Snorted what?

You are suppose to start "Dark Side of the Moon" right when the MGM lion roars, right? I ask for scientific purposes only.

Pffft. Scorsese shot this on a sound stage in AZ for the Illuminati. In fact, I have it on good authority the moon doesn't actually exist.

This sync doesn't really work, but Echoes syncs perfectly to the last part of 2001: a Space Odyssey, Jupiter and Beyond Infinite or whatever it's called. It's even exactly the right length.

At the start of the 3rd roar from the lion.

Seeing those craters, which if made on earth would have resulted in several extinctions, makes me say:

Thank you, moon.

First time I saw Dark Side of the Rainbow, I was all, meh. Seeing Echoes+2001 blew mind mind. The Flaming Lips doing DSOTM live at Red Rocks was pretty outstanding, though.

That's more true than you realize. The albedo (reflectivity) of the moon's surface is approximately the same as freshly laid asphalt. It only appears bright in the night sky because the surrounding sky is dark.

All visible objects are dark, as the fact that they are visible means they are either absorbing or reflecting light.

Is anybody else irritated by the articles that have appeared all over the web trumpeting that this is a "first look at the far side of the moon"? No, it's not, and fark the "news" sources that are either being deliberately misleading or negligently ignorant. (To be fair, NASA should have clarified that more in their press release, but still...)

As at least this article correctly notes that we've had still photos aplenty of the far side. But what even they miss is that we had video before too. (example - not very high quality, both in terms of frame capture rate and resolution, but I'm sure there are better ones; this is just the first one to turn up in my search)

This new video is the first video to be taken of the far side to be taken by one of the GRAIL mission spacecraft. Because they're new. It's NOT the first for any spacecraft.

Graaa...

D'oh, that should be either

"As at least this article correctly notes, we've had still photos aplenty of the far side."

or

"At least this article correctly notes that we've had still photos aplenty of the far side."

Syncs I've tried when I was a teen:
Dark side of the rainbow = works
2001 echoes = haven't seen the whole thing but what i've seen (ie. the last 3rd) is pretty impressive.
(i didn't want to associate echoes with 2001 when listening to it, which is unfortunately what my brain did with DSOTM for a while after doing the sync lol)

and

two combos i might've made up myself:
The Wall / Wizard of Oz: the only part i remember working was when it was playing "In the Flesh" (the one before "run like hell") and it was where the Cowardly Lion was giving a speech, and 'finger shooting' people at the same time Roger sings "i'd have all of ya shot!".

I was listening to "Animals" on a bus trip in high school, and they had "the lion king' on the tv's. I don't remember what point in it i started animals, but i noticed a few similarities. (music, rhythmic stuff, sometimes even vocal matching). the only part i really remember was the agressive coda to "Sheep" syncing with the animals charging down a canyon at full speed.

from the article: " Because the moon doesn't rotate on its axis,..."

The moon rotates on its axis, it just does so at the same rate it revolves around Earth.

/easy to be an expert in something nobody cares about

Those craters were made by Superboy as he was going through puberty. He went to the dark side for some privacy.

Checked the link and yep, doesn't seem to be in any way synched to the movie. Just like I remember it not being twenty years ago when I first tried it. And I smoked about as much as any person could back then. Pink Floyd is epic. The connection to The Wizard of Oz is a joke.

Hooking up a movie I love with a band I never remotely got into? Pass.

You may not have stayed with it long enough. It gets good right about when Ms. Gulch shows up on her bicycle; the section from Professor Marvel through the tornado and into Munchkin Land fits particularly well. There probably never was an intended connection, but it makes for an interesting video accompaniment anyway.

Here's the thing about the whole "Dark Side of the Rainbow" sync: a lot of people will make the claim that they did it on purpose, but I think there's enough parts that have nothing to do with one another to prove that wrong. That said, there are a surprising number of parts that do sync up really well. Watching it intoxicated doesn't help because you're hallucinating or something, it helps because a) you're more easily excited when you see the parts that work really well, and b) you're less prone to getting bored during the in-between parts, when you're just watching a muted (dumb) movie and listening to a great album.

I was never a fan of the movie, and I love that album, so when I watched it with a bunch of friends while smoking pot and drinking beer, I thought it was pretty cool. Moreover, I was thinking "Wow... that was, if nothing else, the most enjoyable viewing of half that movie I've ever had."

/Start the album right as the MGM lion makes his 3rd roar
//Google video link from earlier in the thread has a different starting point. Way too late; it'll miss a lot of the cues
