They do. I used to be a scorekeeper for basketball games. Even things that weren't intended to be a shot count, as long as they go in. I once saw a pass bounce off a player's head into the basket for the game winning points.

Huh? Yahoo Sports actually does sports journalism, unlike ESPN.

Their reporting seems to ebb and flow between "far superior to ESPN" (i.e Miami U scandal), and "something beneath 'pathetic'" (i.e anything written by Chris Chase. Ever.)

Playing youth basketball when I was 10 we once won a game 16-2. One of our players scored for the other team. So nobody on the other team hit a single basket.

Poor kid. At 16-17 I'm sure this is killing him. At 30 he'll have the best story to tell . . . .

The younger the kids, the more likely it was to happen.

/but I've seen it happen in High School games too
//so YMMV

MJD, Chris Chase??

One of my favorites from a quick sample: "Rob Gronkowski impressions by various Patriots teammates"

When I first read the Yahoo article about the "Billy Cundiff jersey on the official Ravens website", the FIRST thing I did was visit the official Raven's website. To my surprise, not only did the Billy Cundiff jersey NOT have a "special offer" associated with it, there WAS no Billy Cundiff jersey.

"Yahoo UPDATE: Cundiff jersey 'offer' in no way affiliated with Baltimore Ravens"

Way to do your research, guys!

I wonder if the parents at that school do this chant:

"We've got Jesus!"
Clap clap clapclapclap

like the ones at the Christian school near us do.

"That what they all say, they all say doh."

What's funny is they didn't pass it to him again after he scored...wow..just wow.

apparently the author of that article wanted to give us the sensation of being that confused. christ that was poorly written...

I'm not saying the neighborhood I grew up in was rough but at our school we used to chant

We've got the clap! Clap! Clap! Clap!
and our parents would say "Jesus"

Something new?

I'd say once every 10 or 12 games at the college/pro level there's a fight for a rebound that goes off the defensive player into the basket. Credit for the points goes to the offensive guy nearest to the ball.

Sure. But a defender going to his own hoop and dunking it? Never ever thought about it really, and dunno why I had the idea it didn't count in those circumstances.

As a former youth whose only two points counted for the other team, I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

My first "goal" I scored playing in a street hockey league as a kid was scored because the goalie dropped the puck back in the net.

I think the real news here is that there is a full time dedicated blog on Yahoo for high school sports.

Perhaps true in NBA, not true in college. NCAA stat rules (PDF, new window) dictate that the points go to the "team."

Article 8. When a field goal is scored in Team A's basket after last being touched by a player on Team B, score the play as follows:

(a) If the touching by Team B was an attempt to block a shot by Team A and did not appreciably alter its flight, then such touching is ignored.

(b) If the touching by Team B came after an attempt, either a FGA or a FTA, by Team A that had obviously missed and there was no control by Team B, then a FGA or FTA is charged to Team A on the original shot. No FGM is credited or FGA charged on the tip-in to either team. Instead, two points are added to Team A's score and a footnote is added to explain the extra points. Also, a dead-ball rebound is credited to Team A. On the box score, the two points should appear on the line used for team rebounds. An asterisk should be placed by the two points and an explanation for the asterisk should be written in the form of a footnote.

(c) If the touching by Team B was a deflection of a ball last in control of Team A but not shot by Team A, then no FGA is charged or FGM credited to either team. The procedure for accounting for the two points is the same as in (b) above.

(d) If the ball was last in control of Team B, then no FGA is charged or FGM credited to either team. The procedure for accounting for the two points is the same as in (b) above. Additionally, charge a player on Team B with a turnover.

Additionally, Rule 5.1.2.a. indicates that such a basket is worth two points regardless of where the shooter is on the floor.

Did this in a rec league game as a 12-year-old. Rebounded a foul shot and forgot I was on defense.

It sucks like few things suck.

Holy shiat, my baby brother's alma mater Norcross High School is in the news again.

Norcross High's previous claim to fame: Around 1980, they were having a huge NWA wrestling card at Norcross High's enormous gym (Gwinnett county: where gym size really matters!). Twas time for the main event, headlined by one of the most popular rasslers in Georgia history...Tim "Mr. Wrestling" Woods....

Except Mr. Wrestling somehow managed to lock himself inside the wrong locker room, and nobody could hear him yelling and screaming to be let out over the crowd noise. No main event that night!

P.S. "Norcross" is pronounced "NAR cross" by the locals.
