I'm honestly surprised there hasn't been a serious try yet considering the number of legitimately crazy people out there.

Clinton was demonized to the point where members of Congress were saying that he would not be safe if he visited their state.

There were just as many crazy people out there when Clinton was in office. Frankly, I heard far more angry, violent rhetoric towards Bill...but then, maybe that was just the angry group I ran with.

Conservative rhetoric against Clinton was just . . . unbelievably crazy, even compared to the crap they spew today. I think that, somewhat paradoxically, Obama has had it worse yet better than Clinton - the conspiracy theories against Obama are more widely but less deeply believed. And ironically, being black has partly inoculated him against most explicit threats of violence.

I'm not. Assassinating the president is really, really hard. He's got arguably the best body guards in the world with the best equipment and support. You've also got a gauntlet of cops and security sweeps to get through before you're within any distance to cause the president any harm. Your best odds of harming the president is to get in a quick punch before you're pummeled by large men and dragged off to jail for a year. And that is if Obama doesn't duck your weak ass moves because he's probably got ninja skills and cat like reflexes.

I'm sure most would-be assassins are thinking "why bother?"

The rhetoric against Clinton was scary. When the New World Order started to become a big ideology during the period, people looked at the Waco and Ruby Ridge as examples of Clinton's iron fist on Christianity. Two screwups became acts that were done on purpose by the government. This became Tim McVeigh's reason of doing the Oklahoma City Bombing, because of people saying that Clinton and his goons intentionally burned down the building and shot the woman. Bullshiat can get people killed.

This. If the president was assassinated it would be pretty much have to be an inside job perpetrated by the Secret Service.

The conspiracy theories against Obama circle almost entirely around his eligibility, or his religion, or something like that. Clinton's made him out to be Al Pacino in Scarface - he was a thug, a murderer. Obama's just an illegal immigrant or something, I don't know.

Exactly. The problem is you set the bar at "serious try." But you have to be incredibly stupid to make an attempt on the president's life. So what are the odds someone incredibly stupid will be able to meet the bar of "serious try?" Pretty much zilch.

This guy, Obama or whatever his name is must be laughing his a$$ off at the American people. Many buy this garbage he says while they can see with their own eyes it is a bunch of nonsense.

I don't use the term evil too often but it fits with this guy. Either that are he is the biggest puppet/moron on Earth. He is not. This is all very well planned and very well executed. The demolition of the United States of America from the top down.

Dear Lord, what have we done?

The dynamics are slightly different now than they were in 1997. The far right hadn't been discredited and marginalized accordingly the way they have been now. Add in that this POTUS actually is a Negro, and concerns for his safety become very real indeed.

The aunt of my sister-in-law was murdered for her car by a man who intended to drive it across the country to assasinate the POTUS. So as far as I'm concerned the right wing/conservative/Republican rhetoric is already a violent reality to some of us.

The only thing Jackson cares about is his own power, which has most likely seen a precipitous decline since Obama became president. That guy is such an exploitative scumbag, I bet he secretly wishes for something tragic to happen to the president, it's the perfect excuse to stir up racial tension and regain some of his lost prominence.

Biden's mouth sometimes works faster than his brain, but..you know what? When Biden gaffs, the things he says are generally correct, often funny, and almost never malicious. When Bush gaffed, for example (and this isn't a b-b-b-but Bush, I'm just responding to the oft-repeated criticism of "why don't you get as upset with Biden?") it was often in a context involving war, death, jingoism, and ignorance. There's a difference.

The right wing didn't do that. A guy named "Need Help Soonish" posted an opinion that a right wing nutjob attempted to assassinate Gabby Giffords and Gabby remains alive so therefore his attempt was failed. And he was right, that is actually what happened.

Other people dying was irrelevant to his point, so he correctly left them out. You're kinda being a dick here magus.
