I'm confused, though. Wouldn't Obama getting elected in the first place have led to the first step? And that was three years ago, so we're already quite a few steps into it. But the "stepping" analogy itself also confuses me. Is the darkness a period determined by a pre-set amount of time (ie, years) or is it a distance to be covered by steps (that would take 100 years to cross at a walking pace)? If it's the first, then why are we stepping at all? Our travel doesn't make a difference if we've got 997 years to go regardless of what we do. If it's a pre-set distance of darkness that needs to be crossed, though...well, we might be able to make some improvements there. I mean, just because the pace we're stepping at now would take 1000 years to get us through the darkness doesn't mean that we can't start a slow jog or something, right? Get through it quicker? Maybe Obama could suggest a "jog for light" initiative...even a slight uptick from a regular walking pace could trim 200, 300 years off the darkness. And if we vary it, maybe do a little sprint here and there, keep up a steady jog? We might be able to get through in half the time. Or less. And think of the shape we'll be in.

Obama was handed a $1 trillion deficit, an $11 trillion debt and two wars that were being paid off the books. If you want to see the economy go off the cliff, make enough cuts to turn that around in a year. Maybe throw some tax cuts in for good measure.

I don't know why it's so hard for people to comprehend that we are never, ever paying that debt off. There have been proposals to deal with it such as giving foreign central banks IMF credits equal to their dollar holdings (which would wipe 30+ years of our debt off the books), but that's about as far as the U.S. is ever going to go. The short version is, it's good be the world's reserve currency.

To be fair, that's because there's a generation that grew up with GW as the only President that they'd known. The fear is that young folks might see a Democratic Presidency, and NOT be consumed by locusts and wild gangs gnawing on human flesh, and realize that the rhetoric was maybe overblown.
