He's probably a small time hobby farmer. My Dad used to do the same thing, he never had over 10 cows at a time. It paid the rent property taxes, insurance on the place and kept the freezer full.

But he also said that among the stolen cattle were some of his best breeders... so he's lost the cattle and all of the calves those cattle would have had... and the milk from the breeding cattle, and the stud fees if there were breeding bulls (often over $1000 per money shot for well bred bulls).

He shoulda just took em to a gunfight at the OK corral.
