It would be appropriate if the Detroit Lions were to play in that particular Super Bowl.

Super Bowl LC
Super Bowl XXXXVIIIII
Super Bowl XXXXVV
Super Bowl IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Considering that I think they way under used the fact that Super Bowl 40 was "XL" (which most would see as "Extra Large"), my guess is if they just don't make a big deal out of it, it will be fine. They also could just decide to go back to arabic numerals for Super Bowl 50.

Or, have Penny Marshall make all of the Super Bowl L garments.....

"L standing for loser with a Nike swoosh right above it -- I love that," said Blake Lundberg, general manager of Adidas' sports licensed division.

That's a pretty good line, right there.

Given the way the NFL thinks and operates, I see a couple possibilities:

1. They eliminate the year 2015, and advance directly from 2014 to 2016 and therefore Superbowl LI. This may be a slight inconvenience to the rest of the planet, but the NFL will politely point out that a planet in the Regula VII system has 32 unused NFL-quality venues and is just looking for a league to relocate.

2. Some sort of Super Bowl Silver Edition logo-even more expensively priced commemorative merchandise for sale.

3. Given the cash that gets raked in, the NFL will somehow figure a way to have 2 Superbowls that year, so the logo can be Superbowl L & LI.

I suspect option 1.

Hold it in Australia and call it Super Bowl Γ.

mr_a: 1. They eliminate the year 2015, and advance directly from 2014 to 2016 and therefore Superbowl LI.

They could accomplish the same by skipping 2013 and claiming that we were lucky to escape 2012 without the world ending and it's best not to tempt fate by having a year of dark forces. Thirteen is an unlucky number and if you add up the digits of 2013 it comes to six. Also if you multiply the positive digits you also get six. You see the pattern.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that everyone involved in the win isn't going to give a good god damn what the roman numerals mean

bulldg4life: I'm going to go out on a limb and say that everyone involved in the win isn't going to give a good god damn what the roman numerals mean

It sounds like it is more of an issue with the advertisers than the teams potentially playing in the Superbowl.

How about they just put Fiddy's likeness on everything?

I was just wondering about this the other day.

Just stop numbering the damn thing. The World Series and Stanley Cup final don't need it. Why should the Super Bowl?

DING DING DING! We have a winner! I can see a big silver shield similar to the current NFL one but all fancied up, with

"FIFTY YEARS OF SUPERBOWL GREATNESS"

or something similar on crest, and

SuperBowl L

down at the bottom below the Football logo and hidden between a couple of "crown of champions" leaf designs.

2012-02-02 09:53:46 AM
It wouldn't be the worst time to just scrap the roman numeral thing at 50 and go in a different direction.

On a semi-related note, I miss the unique Super Bowl logos each year.

Super BowL

Problem solved?

2012-02-02 09:59:13 AM
The "L" Word isn't "Loser"....

Also, "LIV" and "LIX" will be pretty cool.

2012-02-02 10:00:04 AM
It could actually be called the Loserbowl and sponsors would still line up to put their logo anywhere near it. The NFL is too successful for this to be a problem.

2012-02-02 10:01:03 AM
Just put 50 'cuz it's a round number or something.

This.

The design team will just downplay "Superbowl L". Instead they'll really play up the crest and maybe some line about "50 years of victors" or whatever. Super Bowl L in size 10 font will get tossed in there and aside from a couple lame jokes, no one will notice.

If it's that much of a concern, call it ILI. :P :P :P

I would suggest using "Super Bowl 50" everywhere, but when I look at the UFC's numbering, it looks pretty ridiculous to me. For some reason, "CXVII" looks cooler and more respectable than "117." Or, as Yanks_RSJ suggested, just give up using the numbering system. The Roman numerals can get pretty cumbersome looking, with all those Roman numerals that I imagine many people have to take a minute to decipher. No other major sport affixes a designation to their annual championship series. If the NFL does want to be unique in that regard, just call it "Super Bowl (year)." "Super Bowl 2016" has a nice ring to it.

when is Superbowl DIC?

2012-02-02 10:35:05 AM
I fully expect AEG to handsomely reward the NFL for hosting L at Farmer's Field. If not there, then at Roski's Los Angeles Stadium.

expobill: when is Superbowl DIC?

If I remember my Roman numerals correctly DIC isn't possible, the closest you can get is DCI (601) or DXCIX (599)

Now as 'L' is 2016, those would be

DCI: 2567
DXCIX: 2565

2012-02-02 10:36:23 AM
Super Bowl 88 is going to be tedious... "LXXXVIII", time to switch to Arabic I suppose.

DIC would be 599, but, that would be properly written as DXCIX.

DIX is proper usage for 509 though.

But, in either case, we'll be long gone to laugh at it.

Seems to me that switching to Arabic numerals could be all part of the big "to-do" that will be Super Bowl 50.

Maybe they could distract away from it by using like, four Ls, arranged like a pretty flower:

During the game, any defensive player that gets flagged for roughing gets sent to the showers.

They could call it the 51st anniversary of the SuperBowl.

It'll be a fancy logo with both the number 50 and the letter "L."

How about something radical, oh, like Super Bowl 50? I doubt the Romans will be offended if the NFL's use of their fascinating numbering system.
