Nor could I. I wanted to reach through the screen and tear out the voiceover guy's throat.

What does it say about George Lucas that this trailer is entirely plausible?

I know voice actors. They don't always get to set... anything about their work. You have EARN that kind of stuff or work in obscure things like otaku animation where anything goes. I can hear in his voice that he is one of us. He chokes on some of the words. Probably took several takes to read it straight.

I feel like I want to eat the Phantom Menace breakfast cereal now.

Does this trailer mean that we have to let new century kids complain about Lucas raping their childhood now?

2012-02-02 08:12:53 AM
The only thing that could have saved that trailer was if the voice-over was by Plinkett from RedLetterMedia.

I have to admire Lucas' business model. Make one product (a movie), then sell it 4 or more times.

I don't understand who would want to see movies not even shot in 3D, with 3D added to them.

By the way, is there an end to this fad that only Hollywood seems to embrace?

What's crazy is that the first trailer for the 3D release made it look like an actual good movie. I saw that in theater and I was like, "hell yeah, that looks great!" and then I remembered that I saw it already and it sucked.

Can't comment. Can't see 3D (physically, not metaphorically).

Yeah, it's a pretty good movie if you cut it down to three minutes of explosions, chases, and lightsaber fights.

Lucasfilms has actually been working on a 3D conversion for years-way before it was going to be popular. In fact, I think that when they were showing it at trade shows, it actually encouraged people to start shooting stuff in 3D

And who's the market? Simply put: There's a whole bunch of kids who watch and love the clone wars cartoon, but haven't seen the films yet. Or haven't seen it on the big screen.

Nope. Got a couple of TVs. I'm the guy who comes to threads and says I've seen as many 3D movies as Stevie Wonder.

There's plenty of 30ish adults who would gladly fork over money to watch the original movies in the theater again. But, you know, slap some 3d in there, work up some of the cut scenes for no benefit, Greedo shoots first and I'm sure that will make plenty more.

Why does he need more cash? And when he really wants my money he'll release the original trilogy. Untouched, stand alone. Some minor restoration/ cleanup is okay. But that's it.

Star Wars is primarily for children, and has always been primarily for children. More than likely you first saw the original trilogy when you were a child. Now MOVE THE FARK ON with your lives and get over it.

Yeesh, that was awful.

I watched Episode 1 back when the blu-ray set came out, after having not seen it in years, and I realized I had forgotten how much Liam Neeson helped that movie. It's amazing the difference between a movie with two competent acting performances (Neeson & McGregor) versus two movies with only one competent acting performance (McGregor).

i had star wars nerd rage for a bit.. was a big fan, even have a SW tattoo, got burned by the prequels.

but for some reason this trailer didnt bug me at all.
in fact, i think it was pretty good marketing.

Dear George Lucas,

Maybe in the last 30 years you've forgotten, but it's possible to market to children without assuming they're retarded. If you treat them with the slightest respect for their intelligence, you'll produce a work not only beloved by them, but by their parents. Pixar has become huge based on that. Studio Ghibli has become huge based on that. Even Hasbro's new network has become surprisingly big based on that.

You know how you made that movie a decade ago and it was for kids? The kids didn't get younger. The same age of people who you were marketing it to you're still marketing it to, so there's no reason for the marketing to get even stupider.

Star Wars itself was beloved by kids, teenagers, and adults. Indiana Jones was beloved by kids, teenagers, and adults. This re-release of the Phantom Menace and the marketing surrounding it makes it seem like you realize that no one will love it, no one did love it, and that only slow children will even enjoy it.

Sincerely,
Captain Roni on Kath Hound because goddammit, even though Star Wars is dead to me, The Old Republic is pretty awesome.

Yeah. My first reaction was "Oh, this is a fake trailer someone cut to.... wait, it's real?" Click on YouTube icon "Holy Fark! they're admitting this is all a ploy to sell toys and cereal! You are so blind! You so do not understand! You weren't there at the beginning. You don't know how good it was! How important! This is it for you! This jumped-up firework display of a toy advert! People like you make me sick! What's wrong with you?! Now, I don't care if you've saved up all your 50ps, take your pocket money, and GET OUT!"
