way
too much

That makes sense, because if you increase an investment bank CEO's salary by ten times, it attracts people who don't give a shiat about safe-guarding the economy.

Alabama state Sen. Shadrack McGill said that increasing teacher pay is against "a biblical principle" because it might attract people who otherwise wouldn't do the job.
I really don't trust anyone who says they're doing things according to 'biblical principal'.

Sorry, but that is what the demographics say. Keep 'em stupid, they vote GOP.

Look Shadrack, If you're going to bring up Biblical Principle, you should probably get Meshach and Abednego's opinion on that too. Otherwise you're liable to turn up the heat a bit too much.

Lawmakers entered the 2007 legislative session making $30,710 a year, a rate that had not been changed in 16 years. The raise increased it to $49,500 annually

McGill voted himself a 67% pay raise

makes more in a year than a teacher with a Master's Degree and 15 years of experience
(new .XLS window).

Some biblical principles.
Johh Chapter 18
36 Jesus said,
"My kingdom is not of this world.
If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place."
Mark Chapter 12
13 Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. 14 They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not? 15 Should we pay or shouldn't we?"
But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it." 16 They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose image is this? And whose inscription?"
"Caesar's," they replied.
17 Then Jesus said to them, "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's."
And they were amazed at him.
I think many people would be amazed at Jesus teaching, HAD THEY ACTUALLY READ HIM!

Perhaps time for a little
West Wing idealism
.
Sam Seaborn: Mallory, education is the silver bullet. Education is everything. We don't need little changes, we need gigantic, monumental changes. Schools should be palaces. The competition for the best teachers should be fierce. They should be making six-figure salaries. Schools should be incredibly expensive for government and absolutely free of charge to its citizens, just like national defense. That's my position. I just haven't figured out how to do it yet.

This article doesn't mention it, but right after McGill said teachers don't deserve a raise because of the Bible, he said the recent 62% raise that the legislature voted for itself was completely justified, because it "protected legislators from corruption."

Especially when it's obvious they're just making things up and claiming they're "Biblical". It really gives an ugly insight into the religious fanatic's twisted mind.
Then again if you see
how well these people teach their own children

Teachers homeschool at a higher percentage than the general population, so you might have something there about them being concerned about the future of their own children. Too bad they aren't as concerned about the children they're paid to teach.

Teachers homeschool at a higher rate because they have the skills to do it, and realize what republicans have done to public education in this country.
I'd do it except I'm, you know, teaching other people's kids during the day. As it is, I'm in the hell of knowing exactly what is going on and being unable to stop it from happening to my son.

The flip side to this guy's Coin Of Stupid is, If they don't pay teachers enough, they're only going to attract people who can't do any better for themselves. And we shouldn't want that level of inability being in charge of our children.
Novel idea: Instead of weighing the benefits of the kind of people you would attract (you're in Alabama - you're already behind the 8 ball), weigh the importance of the job and the demands you place on the people who fill it.

Hurf derf. I'm sure everyone who cooks is a chef in your world, too. And I guess it shows just how "hard" they "work" that it is indeed a fact that public school teachers homeschool at a higher percentage than non-public-school-teachers. What you think doesn't determine reality. About 25% of homeschooled children have at least one certified teacher as a parent. Don't like that fact? Tell certified teachers to send their kids to public school like everyone else.

yes yes and don't forget when you are weighing all this; about who pays for it and how they pay for it and all the other things they have to pay for. So as good as teachers are and I've had some great ones; the pay is second to the duty and for many the enjoyment of the job. But yes they should be compensated for the job in an equitable manner.
My problem is with the union leaders that negotiate deals in bad faith which robs from the taxpayer and gives only to the unions. The teachers are as much the victims of bad promises as the tax-payers...of whom many are a portion in their communities.
There is a fiduciary duty implied within all public service jobs...including teaching. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be well paid but it does mean that pay and benefits have to be negotiable...yes even downwards. It would be nice to be able to afford them six figure pay and the like...but except in a rare few cases it is not feasible.
thank you,
have a good morning.

so what you're saying is 75% of people are getting unbelievably bad homeschooling?
This doesn't take into account that someone could be a certified teacher and completely crazy at the same time, as that's not exclusive. We're talking anything from religious fundamentlists to neonazis on that.
