i used to be a rave dj back in the early 90's (yeah yeah). i have a large record collection and still mess around on the tables from time to time. a co-worker and myself were in Best Buy a few years and some kid that worked there was all over this iPod dj interface and was excited to show it to us as we walked by. it was a laughable cheap plastic POS, but the kid was all smiles. i told him i used to dj and that i prefer records.

he looked at me with this rather blank look and then nodding said "my grandad has records"

Wow.... interesting thoughts on here.... I think the only reason I did not read any fakery into it is because during a recent basement cleanout, one of my young nieces, and maybe one not so young, saw some 8-track tapes and were absolutely clueless as to what they were.

Is it an unreasonable leap to think everything works like a CD if it's all you've ever seen? Nah....

Is it unreasonable to tell your daughter this is how music USED to be played, when vinyl is making a comeback? YES!

Also, the recording surface of a CD is silicon, not a polymer, and since silicon is a solid and polymers are semi-solids a CD doesn't suffer from any of the "settling" issues that gradually distorts the ridges on a record over time.

Hmmm. I don't know. . .I've been giving lessons and holding "workshops" for middle school music students the last couple of years, and one of my method books I used to love is not available with cd accompaniment. So, I dug an old record of it out of my dad's office (he's their band director), and the dozen or so sixth graders greeted its arrival with blank stares, giggles, and bug-eyed astonishment. They were even more incredulous when I showed them HOW to use it.

Finally one kid piped up and said, "Oh yeah, my older brother showed me a really old youtube video once, and they had those!" The kicker? The "really old video" was AM Radio by Everclear.

CD's are made of polycarbonate plastic (i.e. a polymer) and an aluminum reflective layer. The data is stored in the polycarbonate. There is no silicon because there is no need for any semiconductors.

About a half hour. The trolls came out from under their bridge, and from the next bridge downriver as well.

I have no reason to question the performance, since it's not some schmuck posting a wacky video to Youtube, it's a well-known science fiction author. My kids, were they presented with a similar situation, would likely act in a similar manner to Athena. Especially if they were on camera.

I'm not going to comment on its authenticity but you morons saying that a 13 year old should know about vinyl records are little daft. I haven't owned a record since the 80's so it's not terribly hard to believe that a 13 year old would have never seen one before. Give it another 10-15 years and most people that age would have never seen a CD either.

i buy the premise; most people that age probably never have seen an LP in real life, and im sure a few have never even seen them in movies etc.

im 10 years older then this kid and i barely caught a glimpse of a record player growing up. any of you guys saying otherwise are exactly the type of old farts this clip is supposed to impress. did you know computers used to run on 'tubes of vacuums'?

good call...and that is my thought as well...to the poster above...it is not so much that we don't believe some 13 year old has never seen a record, it is that we don't believe that THIS 13 year old has never seen a record before.

/my two year old picked out a record for the first time the other day...I just like 'em, I collect 'em. Nostalgia I guess.
