looks like he stuck the landing pretty well.

Ugh. Chairlifts always make me nervous as hell. Something about being all bundled up and not being able to catch my butt on the chair the right way the first time always freaks me out.

2012-02-01 09:46:07 PM
if I was on the ground I'd be more concerned about catching a ski to the face. snow is soft...let him fall.

From this pic it looks like the kid is just hotdoggin' it with no poles and dad looks like he's had a little too much lodge beer.

I've been skiing for many years and one thing I always dread when getting on single with the youngins' is a situation like this.
/they tend to squirm a lot

Good for all involved.

The incident happened on the same day that a young woman died after falling for a chair lift while skiing in Park City, Utah.

Let that be a lesson ladies. Don't love inanimate objects--not even powered ones.

LOL I forgot my kid. Toss him up here.

Don't they put seat belts on those rides?

My best ski lift ever:
AIGUILLE DU MIDI - Chamonix, France
Didn't want to kill myself so I took it back down two levels!

There are the safety bars but people rarely use them. When I was younger I never did. Now that I'm old and not invincible, I clamp those suckers down as soon as I'm on.

I guess there wasn't enough time or presence of mind to tell the kid to knock off his skis before he got caught by the bystanders. But it worked, so that's awesome.

Safety bars should be mandatory in all states.

No.

The danger of getting caught in a belt on the way off the lift is actually greater than the danger of falling. Get one wrapped around you the wrong way, and you'll get dragged at the top.

phrawgh: The HERO tag is for the dad, right?

Yes, the people at the bottom have seen a streetlight on the pole and are praying.

Yeah, I agree. Into snow, kid would have sustained minor injuries. I jumped off a bridge when I was 14. Fell 20 feet and hit a rock that was underwater. I got the wind knocked out of me and broke my ankle.

Didn't anyone think to use the stretchy orange plastic fence in the foreground as a net?

2012-02-02 12:37:11 AM
I like how the article first makes the leap of connecting it to a death in Park City, but then just goes a million miles off course by trying to play six degrees of separation with Sarah Burke. Skiing and snowboarding are as safe (or dangerous) as you make them... good decision making leads to happy outcomes, but Darwin is ever-present.

Is it possible to take off skis without using your hands? Cos I would have been terrified of catching someone wearing skis-it would be far more dangerous than for the person being caught. It was an amazing catch-I wonder if they were planning all along to catch him by his skis like that.

swingerofbirches: Is it possible to take off skis without using your hands

depends on the skis. some you can hit a heel catch and they fall off, but it takes some coordination to do so.

humanshrapnel: Didn't anyone think to use the stretchy orange plastic fence in the foreground as a net?

you're a genius, they could have doubled it up a few times to be sure. That kid and his dad would've felt bad if one of those skis went down someones throat and out their butt.

2012-02-02 12:49:51 AM
Not trying to be a he-man ITG (well, maybe a little), but that kid doesn't look that heavy. Couldn't he have lifted him back on?

They say that kinda thing about seat belts too, but hey, American's have a right to die in the stupidest and most pointless of ways possible I guess.

I saved my cat from sure death by reaching down and grabbing her after slipping from the 2nd floor railing. I'm not sure she truly appreciated my quick reflexes, since all I got in return was a scratched forearm

Geez 25 feet up over soft snow and wearing a helmet? thank god those guys caught him or he might have...uhm...sprained an ankle maybe?

News. Breaking a leg while skiing is not unheard of. Just putting that out there.

2012-02-02 12:58:31 AM
How did this article go from a story about a mildly dangerous situation involving a child skier who wasn't even skiing to a story about a pro skier who died while attempting a high speed downhill run?

I hate it when media types try to link completely unrelated events together in desperate attempt to find some sort of pattern involved. And I dont care if they were at the same location. One is completely unrelated to the other.

If I can ski down a mountain drunk and high without dying, safety bars on a resort controlled, regularly inspected piece of machinery are unnecessary.

Yes, but you need leverage to do it (usually you use your pull to push down on the heel of the binding, but you can use your ski/boot). I seriously doubt he would have been able to do it while dangling like that. He would have to push down with one leg while pulling up with the other.

Yeah it's easy enough to do if you're standing and taking your skis off, but I would not want to try it dangling from my father's hand 30 feet above the ground

Yeah, if my kid was hanging from a chairlift 40 feet above the ground, the last thing I would be worried about is taking off his skis.

Well in all fairness my dad is 6" shorter and 50 lbs lighter than me, but the sentiment would stand if I were a kid haha

Pffft. Amateurs. real heroes would have formed a human ladder and then proceeded to ski down the mountain

while still in formation.
