Great. So the choice is to get massively overworked, shiat on by doctors and patients, and blamed if anything goes wrong,
or
have administrators, teachers, parents, students, and Republicans shiat all over you, and have politicians cut your salary and benefits and use you as examples of "what's wrong with government in America",
or
earn a buck over minimum wage, bust your ass, get no benefits, get fired if you grab a couple of fries, and if Fark is any guide, get smacked around on a regular basis by drunk fat women until you have to beat their asses with a pipe.

I'm going to be a nurse that teaches employees at fast food restaurants how to give CPR.

2012-02-01 08:25:53 PM
There are too many nurses, teachers are going to get cut and fast food, yeah that'll pay the bills.

2012-02-01 08:29:09 PM
I thought of being a Nurse, teacher and fast food worker, but it didn't appeal to me.

I'm going to be a lawyer, dentist and real estate agent.

Considering I've mostly decided at this point to just keep working for the Ph.D. I approve of this.

No way in hell would I teach anyone between 12 and 16 years old. 8-11 or 17 and up sometimes sounds appealing. It's a career I've given some thought to.

I would hate to say it but the job field with the most job security is IT. There are always going to be people who don't know how to do something on a device and would rather pay someone to do it for them then RTFM! Pay is only so-so but hey as long as you show up on time you probably wont get fired!

2012-02-01 08:51:57 PM
Teachers- Not hiring. Plus a general decline in number of children.

Nurses- They hire heavily from overseas now. Plus they are cranking out nurses now in our vast higher education industry. Wages and benefits will only go down for nurses as union continue to kick neutered in this country.

Fast food- The next brave frontier for automation in this country. You best believe they are making a robot that can flip burgers, put in fries, and serve coke.

Great, those six are the only ones that actually take part in the production and distribution of some actual good. And we wonder why there's a huge export deficit and why our economy is collapsing.

Yeah, but education by itself doesn't actually produce everything, and only certain types of education produce something useful. Just ask someone with a degree that ends in "Studies." If they can even get an interview the potential employer will wonder if they have the requisite IQ to put on velcro shoes.

None of these jobs are going to pay much more than minimum wage, so we have an impoverished hand-to-mouth society on the way. Except for the 1% who started off with all the money. Lovely.

And I can't imaging teaching becoming a growth industry. I'm taking some online classes now, and there's almost no interaction with a teacher. The books and tests are all software. All the teacher does is plug the test results into the gradebook.

Same thing that happened to mine. If it moved, we outsourced it. We declared ourselves a service economy but nobody thought about WHAT we were servicing or how we could service it long term. Then all manner of crap happens and we get this nice long, double dip (thank you Goldman & Sach's for fudging Greece's books) recession and depression. It'd be easy to hunker down, work our way out of it...

EXCEPT WE DON'T FARKING MAKE ANYTHING ANY MORE. And if we did, we now have two generations of people with their heads so far up their own asses that a grunt job like 'Bus driver' (that pays £17k - £20k minimum) can't get anyone to apply for it, except those from Poland. No no. Can't do something like that.

I've a 25 year old 'friend'. Left school with 3 GCSE's, no career, no work history. Wants to play in IT at my level. I'm a farking AIX admin. I'll leave some other Brit to explain exactly how farked they are with 3 GCSE's... I'm too pissed.

If by teacher, you mean inner city moving target. Seriously, there are no good teaching jobs available, but there are nightmarish teaching jobs aplenty. Most don't make it an entire year. The turnover rate in these schools is higher than at most telemarketing companies.

Wayne 985: The death of our manufacturing industry and a rapidly expanding group of old people.

"Death" may be a wee bit of an exaggeration. The U.S. still has the largest manufacturing output of any nation in the world. And it hasn't declined any in 110 years, though the rate of growth has lessened in the past decade, it is still positive growth, not negative. The U.S. still outputs 20% of the manufacturing capacity of the entire world. China has recently come close to catching up, or may surpass the U.S. in output soon, but that doesn't mean the U.S. growth has declined, it means China's growth has been nothing short of explosive.

Though it is true that with ever increasing automation manufacturing jobs don't increase as much as manufacturing output does. Perhaps that is what you are lamenting.

Damnaged: Yeah, but education by itself doesn't actually produce everything

It produces an educated person, which is a good usable by society as a whole.

I disagree on the cashier and fast food prep. There are a number of automated checkout systems currently under development. You may have one person overseeing 15 or 20 stations in the near future.

The same thing with food prep. It is already happening in drink dispensing. Automation will cut the number of people behind the counter.

And retail is farking worthless these days, unless you happen to find a small business where the owner isn't an idiot. So many retail jobs opening in small towns now are large chains where you the pay-to-bullshiat ratio is off the charts.

The sad thing is, talk to your grandparents about people who worked retail in the 30s-60s. Back then, a store paid a decent wage you could live off of - you just had to know your product. But I guess wage repression and wanting that extra 0.3% of profit margin has driven places like Wal-Mart, Gamestop, and Best Buy to squeeze blood from a stone.
