in this picture released by KCNA January 1, 2012. North Korea called on its people to rally behind new leader Kim Jong Un and protect him as "human shields" while working to solve the "burning issue" of food shortages by upholding the policies of his late father, Kim Jong-il.

Sandor at the Zoo: I'd be fascinated to know what percentage of North Koreans actually fully buy into the cult of personality surrounding the Kims, and what percentage just think it's better to play along in order to keep their positions and/or lives.

North Korean defectors say most people actually believe it. The lack of information from the outside world is really stunning, and the Kims are revered, in an almost religious way. Everything good comes from the leader or the vision of Kim Il-Sung. Protection from American imperialism is a necessity. Everything bad must be the fault of corrupt high-level officials, never the Kims. People who have contacts in Japan or who leave NK to go to the outside world often get disenchanted by the system and its constraints. The system - not focusing anger at the very top of that system, even though North Korea is effectively a Stalinist style monarchy.

The top level elites who know of the lifestyle enjoyed by the Kims are a different story, but often they're actually in the Kim family or they usually have powerful incentives to maintain their dominant position in the North Korean hierarchy, and there are disincentives from leaving or rebelling (their whole families will be punished.)

He looks so woefully unprepared to be the leader of his tree fort never mind an entire country.

Also, there are quite a few pictures of him that almost look like he's being held up instead of 'escorted'. Maybe getting off the couch after so many years of video games is too much for him to handle.

Two things I take away from that picture...

A) They can't even afford to photoshop a net onto that goal, let alone actually have one.

B) There is no heat and possibly very little light given how much contrast the lighting from the flash is creating on the nearby subjects, and how they are all in very warm clothing indoors.

If Junior does his job right, he'll have each faction playing off each other to keep them from turning on him. However, pops had decades of grooming to learn how to do that and Junior hasn't been around for as long. Plus they have critical infrastructure problems (which is an understatement). I'm predicting a coup in the next six years followed by annexation by China.

I think that while many may not buy into the deifying of dear leader(s), they may buy into the "we are constantly under attack, our enemies are trying to eliminate us all!" more. That plus the forced isolation and literal 1984-style propoganda pumped into the homes of all the citizens 24 hours a day probably has a bigger effect on their psyche than the 'dear leader shot 8 holes-in-one the first time he ever played golf' stuff.

I'm not so certain that Kim Jong Il was running the show. It's hard for a personality cult leader to maintain actual control over a strong military when he hasn't been commanding the forces long enough to form alliances with generals. Even if Daddy had the ability to do so, Son is too young. He's probably the face, while the military is actually running the show. The military needs the Kims because of the personality cult they formed (which I suspect has enough believers among the populace to be effective).

I can't see the status quo changing unless Kim Jong Un makes some early attempt at wresting real power from the junta.

I agree that it's pretty clear he's not actually in charge I guess what I'm getting at is that transitional periods like this are always fraught with danger. Combine that with the energy and food crises and I think its likely that he's holding the bag when it all come to a head.

I think my point is that it's probably not even a transition as long as Li'l Kim does as he is told. Unless Kim wants to make a grab for genuine power, and I don't think he has the resources for that, each side has a vested interest in propping up the other - Kim, in ensuring that the military support and maintain his de facto monarchy, and the military, in hiding behind the countenance of a semi-divine figurehead.

When I was eight, I handled a basketball for the first time and dunked it from exactly this spot. Won the game and got the girl True story.

Two things I take away from that picture...
A) They can't even afford to photoshop a net onto that goal, let alone actually have one.
B) There is no heat and possibly very little light given how much contrast the lighting from the flash is creating on the nearby subjects, and how they are all in very warm clothing indoors.

Let me add two more
C) No room for bleachers (see far end corner)
D) The awful floor paint--especially the green--needs another coat (or stripped off completely)

rockhound: Would someone hem his pants already. Or get him some that fit.

Came here to say that. Not a single item of his clothing fits in any of the pictures. And his shoes are cushy fat guy "dress" shoes.

But I suppose the good leather soles get boiled and eaten by slaves on the downlow the minute he goes to bed with his concubines every night.

Are you suggesting that the Kim family inner circle actually believes the kid is a supergenius progeny of a god?

If Junior does his job right, he'll have each faction playing off each other to keep them from turning on him. However, pops had decades of grooming to learn how to do that and Junior hasn't been around for as long. Plus they have critical infrastructure problems (which is an understatement). I'm predicting a coup in the next six years followed by annexation by China.

How would a coup play to the indoctrinated masses? Overthrowing the Eternal Leader's grandson? Wouldn't that be like overthrowing Jesus?

Or, I guess, Jesus's portly kid.

I think he keeps trying to run away, once he stole that horse, so they have to get hold of him or have food in front of him.

The hats are what always get me. Not the fuzzy warm ones; I mean the officers' cap ones. The style looks oddly kind of cute on the women, but on the guys the things are like fabric-covered mixing-bowls, or something that a character in a Super Mario game might wear.

I wonder how long till one of those men in the background decide it is time to eliminate the "Dear Leader" and take power for themselves.

Yeah. From the reports of people like classmates (he was educated out of the country) he's actually a really nice guy. Sort of a stereotypical computer science nerd - which is what he is.

If he can get past some of the generals more accustomed to his father's reign, he could probably actually do a lot of great things where he is. But they probably figure they have to "guide" him for a significant period of time - it's going to be interesting to see what happens. Civil war, or social revolution, or conversion of "nice programmer nerd" to dictator.

Almost every picture could have the caption "What is this? This isn't food." and it would work. Except the pictures with food in them. Those need only "Food."

That was kind of a given from the beginning....but my question....what designs do the generals have? Is there any intel on the N. Korean military goals/objectives? Besides eating?

Sure. He hasn't solidified power yet, he needs to do what "they" say.

The problem being that there is likely more than one "them."

They probably plan to keep the North Korean government running just as it was when Kim Jong-il was in charge. In other words, if you aren't part of the inner party close to the leader or are a soldier, you go on starving. They've already been throwing people in forced labor camps for not mourning Kim Jong-il's death enthusiastically enough. They've threatened to label people who try to defect to China or use mobile phones during the 100-day mourning period for Kim Jong-il as war criminals. Punishments range from being sentenced to forced labor camps, to execution for repeat offenders.

In other words, business as usual. There is a lot of fear amongst the higher ups that there will be demonstrations of public unrest after the death of Kim Jong-il and they're doing everything in their power to ensure that doesn't happen.

MusicMakeMyHeadPound: Land is land. I'm not saying China would allow North Korean citizens to enter China freely for a generation or two or any such population-mixing idiocy, but hey - even as a prison state it's got value.

Two things I recall regarding NK that came out of the recent Wikileaks triumph/fiasco:

1) China has no farking clue what to do with NK either. They're not comfortable with their batshiat-crazy neighbor, but at the same time they really don't want a US ally right on their border.
2) Internally, they figure they can accept 300,000 refugees from NK before "sealing the border." I don't know for sure what that means, but it sounds like machine-gunning civilians.

NK refugees can't go south - too many farking landmines in the DMZ. Well...they'll try anyway. That, and taking the sea route with mostly-poor results. It'll be a shiatshow on both ends of the country.

/"How many people are in NK?"
/"About twenty million."
/"... Oh God."

You mean open themselves up to take the blame for their actions? As long as Jong-Un is a good boy, I don't think that will happen.
