I don't know why, but this reminds me of when I was a kid in China during the 80s. Because we were all really poor, we only rarely could afford a bottle of soda, so it was a real treat when a relative goes to the hospital because sometimes they'll bring back a bottle of sterile glucose solution used for intravenous feeding and we'd drink that for fun.

No idea why this story made me think of that. Anyway, end threadjack.

Who drinks as much soda in a day as a drunk typically does in a day?

I'm a drunk and I dont drink any soda any day.

As someone who has been on a low-carb diet for a couple years...I'll second that. My health has dramatically improved (along with my weight) since I cut carbs down to 20-30 a day.

2012-02-01 05:37:50 PM
And this is why I don't give a crap when people tell me how unhealthy artificial sweeteners are. The sugar's just as bad if not worse, plus it makes you fat.

Any wonder scientists are so disrespected?

That's stupid.

There should be a weight limit instead.

They suggest establishing taxes on "sweetened fizzy drinks (soda), other sugar-sweetened beverages (for example, juice, sports drinks and chocolate milk) and sugared cereal."

Why don't you take your sin taxes, dust them with a little powdered sugar, and cram them straight up your ass?

2012-02-01 06:06:58 PM
There isn't real sugar in any domestic sweet thing at all anymore.

FTFA:
So the scientists think the biggest problem with regulating sugar is the sugar lobby*.

*Not to be confused with a candy-filled receiving room, the sugar lobby is actually very powerful.

The sugar lobby is not nearly as powerful as the corn lobby, and that's where the majority of the sugar in snack foods comes from. Sugar companies may have favorable tariffs, but agrobiz actually gets subsidies.

as long as weed remains illegal I'm fine with any asinine policy

I once had to stop my mom from putting grape soda into my 3 month old nephew's baby bottle.

She is the type of person that makes this kind of law so damn tempting. I wouldn't want this to be a law, but I understand why some people would.

This has got to be satire. . .I hope.

Not true, particularly if you have allergies. HFCS or artificial sweeteners give me a screaming headache. Once in a while I drink a Coke in a glass bottle with real sugar. Divine.

Hey, we were poor and this was China in the 1980s (before the economy took off) when we still had ration stamps for stuff like eggs and milk. What'd you expect?

How well does a 2 liter of soda compare to say a fifth (.75 L) of vodak? I don't know how much alcohol an average alcoholic drinks in a day. From what I remember of the alcoholics I knew in college, they usually put away a fifth of vodak per day.

I bet that nearly every person who posts an objection to this has ridden their high f*cking horse over a smoker or drinker on Fark.

FTA: "Alcohol is not only an addictive substance that can poison the body in large enough quantities, but also impairs judgment to the point where a drinker might, say, get into a car and plow into another vehicle or a pedestrian. The government doesn't regulate these substances just to protect the smokers and drinkers, it does so to protect others from the smokers and drinkers. Unless we discover that sugar hurts the people who watch us eat it, strict restrictions may be a long time coming.'

They're obviously working for the coffee lobby...

/Think about it: FDA official limit for cola and pepper soft drinks: 71 mg/12 oz.
//Red Bull (not a soft drink, 8.3 oz): 80 mg.
///Regular cup of coffee (8 oz): ~133 mg.
///Folgers does the Nelson at Pepsi and Coke.

I say we skip all these little steps, lets just make it so no one under 18 can buy anything.

I say people can't make good decisions for themselves, so we should force them. Let's go right to mandatory execise. Slight loss of liberty, major improvements in health, no unintended consequences at all. Bonus jobs from government exercise inspectors (ignore Broken Window fallacy).

Which is why actual taste tests have demonstrated that HFCS American Coke out of a can tastes better than real-sugar Mexican coke from a bottle. For one example:

Isn't fructose basically the sugar you find in fruit? So they're telling us apples, kiwi, mangoes, grapes, etc are BAD? That's just crazy talk right there.

*pours more Cinnabon creamer in her coffee*

I don't hit the Akvavit until dark, so abou another half hour. :-D

Why earlier tonight @6:37ish in a local store, I witnessed a tiny toddler being allowed to drink as much as she wanted, nay encouraged, from her Mom's large super sized econ o'cup 'o goodness of fructose enhanced, polysorbated, soda!

downstairs: Who drinks as much soda in a day as a drunk typically does in a day?

i do. i used to be a drunk. it was hard to get sober, beyond my ability to tell. the bubbly soda became a substitute of sorts. 12-24 cans coca-cola / day, easy. very few teeth left in my head (also take handful psych meds / daily).

but many are out there like me.

/was also soda deprived as a child, if that's a factor.

PS: had an aunt was a coca-cola junkie. she loved the bubble so much she would some times place a powder or a Alka-Seltzer tab in the coke for more bubbly kicks. she too was happyville.

Yeah. Good luck trying to pass that kind of law with Coca Cola's lawyers on the other side, Poindexter.

HFCS is nothing like naturally occurring fruit sugars.

Read the label carefully. I've seen "Mexican" coke in glass bottles, Spanish labels, but it's still HFCS. Don't automatically assume it's sugar.

That's backwards. Sugar is an alcohol.

Seems like this "scientists" is having problems telling the difference between sugar and high fructose corn syrup as he keeps using them interchangeably when they most certainly not. Either that or it's the article writer doing it which reminds me of this:

Ne expectations, I just never would have considered that glucose solution would be pleasant to drink. It never occurred to me. I mean, sure, it's sugar water, but you didn't have sugar in your house or some form of natural sugar available that you could have simply added to water? Sugarcane, or sugar beets or something like that?
