I've always wondered...

What are the odds of catching YOUR OWN disease, and dying from it?

What was his batting average?

Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig's disease. His parents must have hated him to name him that.

I would have gone with IRONIC, as he was not diagnosed with ALS until long after he had dedicated his career to researching it.

Hey, these symtoms seem kind of familiar...

At least he had incentive to finish his work.

Actually, this could've been the most literal use of the "FAIL" tag since its inception.

My grandfather died of this.

He fought kamikazes then went to work in the oil fields of west texas and raised a happy healthy family, never hurt his kids, never left his wife and for it all he got to slowly waste away and die helpless on his back.

sucks.

2012-02-01 04:46:26 PM
Isn't it ironic? Don't ya think?

Stephen Hawking has this disease.

It's a good thing he doesn't live somewhere with socialized medicine; he'd never have been able to get treatment.

There are better ways to go than others though, and ALS is probably one of the shiattiest ways to go, your mind is still sharp as your body ceases to work over time.

Ironically medical science has figured out Lou Gehrig didn't die from Lou Gehrig's disease.

/There was a FARK thread about a few months ago.

Huh, today is my personal "Lou Day". Six years ago this very day a doctor looked me in the eye and told me the news. "You have ALS". Statistcally I would shuffle off this mortal coil in about 5 years. Talk about your whoa moment. Thirty seven years old, budding tri-athlete and newly married.

Thankfully, after about a year and a half of thinking I was dirt nap-bound the degradation of my motor skills leveled off and I've been where I'm at now ever since. Using a manual wheelchair, but otherwise living a normal life.

Yay, me.

sidenote: fark Dr. Stephen Hawking in his crooked face. Nothing against him personally, but when a newly diagnossed ALS patient takes to the internet to learn more about this effed up disease it seems every single farking article mentions the 4-6 year diagnosis-to-death statistic, but oh, Dr. Hawking has lived over 20 years with the disease. Your results may vary.

ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's Disease) has to be one of the worse ways to go.

Huntington's disease, which combines Parkinson's with Alzheimer's is not pleasant either.
