That's probably because California is overrun by zips.

Just look at the sales figures for Honda minivans in CA and you'll get an accurate representation for how many there are here.

As with everything in life, dosage is key.

Is it a few extra plane flights worth or within EPA targets/guidelines for radiation release?

This sounds like when engineers and lawyers get in the same room.

Lawyer: Was there a radiation leak?

Engineer: Short answer, no. Long answer, maybe. You see, due to the design of the gimball valve in exit pipe B3, and taking into account the level of ethernet gas in the flux capacitor, combined with the phase of the moon and the alignment of Mars, I guess it's possible. But no, there was almost certainly no leak.

Laywer: So you're saying there might have been a leak?

Engineer: No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying there theoretically could have been, but there's no way there was. And even if there was, it'd be less than 1% of the dose you'd get flying from LAX to Vegas. So small our monitoring devices wouldn't even see it.

Lawyer: So there might have been a leak and our monitoring isn't adequate?!

There needs to be a clear explanation about which types of radiation. Alpha or beta particles? What isotope, 1/2 life etc. They already know this.

Mercury News reporting about poisoning?

The tubes are part of equipment that is virtually new, having been installed in 2010.

While it is slightly concerning any time people in a position of authority or information won't use concrete numbers, such as this particular case, I have to wonder....

Do the morons who freak the ever-loving fark out every time the word "radiation" comes up give a wide berth to the giant pile of bananas in the produce aisle at their local supermarket? Because if you're that freaked out over the very concept, I have some really, really bad news for you.

According to a report this morning I heard, it was steam containing radioactive hydrogen. If that's the case, we're talking deuterium and a little tritium, which glows in the dark, so everyone in CA should evacuate immediately. Nevada, too. Can't be too paranoid.

Ever been to Utah? Ra-di-a-tion. Yes, indeed. You hear the most outrageous lies about it. Half-baked goggle-box do-gooders telling everybody it's bad for you. Pernicious nonsense. Everybody could stand a hundred chest X-rays a year. They ought to have them, too. When they canceled the project it almost did me in. One day my mind was full to bursting. The next day - nothing. Swept away. But I'll show them. I had a lobotomy in the end.

Of course they are. They don't want everyone to freak out. It's just a few broken tubes. No big deal.

Tritium emits alpha particles, which means that unless you inhale it continuously in a high concentration, it's not very likely to harm you.

Since the amount seems to be so small as to not set off detectors around the plant, honestly, this is much adeu about nothing. Of course, they need to fix the problem, but this is not going to cause mutant babies to be born tomorrow either.

We need to quit rebuilding these one-off reactors and replace 'em with new generation reactors using standardard modules - that would allow construction to be standardized, testing to be the same for every component, and replacement components cheaper and even stored on site. Nothing can eliminate all possible leaks but the newer designs reduce the risk by several orders and are more efficient.

San Onefre is pretty old and in a bad location. It would not take much of a tsunami to wreck it. The leaky steam generator is also practically brand new. Maybe it's still under warranty...

It's also infamous for having one of its reactors accidentally installed backwards during construction.

This has a very Aaron Sorkin West Wing feel to it...Duck and Cover!

"As a potentially deadly crisis at a nuclear power plant in Southern California throws the White House into a state of emergency, the Republican presidential candidates Vinick and Santos (Alan Alda, Jimmy Smits) struggle to find a good campaign strategy to deal with the situation."

I suspect the reason no concrete numbers are being used is because there wouldn't be much of a scary story if people knew it was less than a mili-curie.

Visible light is a form of radiation. But what we're talking about here is ionizing radiation. There's quite a bit of difference. Ionizing radiation is known to cause cancer. Non-ionizing radiation is known to excite molecules and warm them.
