Think of how many billions of miles you'd have missed the earth by. According to The Internets, our galaxy is moving at 900,000 miles per hour towards Hydra. That'd be 315,360,000,000 miles off the mark, unless your time machine is a kick ass FTL ship too.

I thought space and time are intertwined. IE, a time machine is the same as an FTL drive.

But(and forgive me, my physics is rusty) take those "light cones".

Time traveling past where the light was emitted means you've reached beyond that point in time and space, you've moved to before the event. It's almost as nonsensical as asking "what was before the Big Bang", except we do have a before we are trying to reach and entropy would have had to decrease in the entire universe and I think my brain just refuses to conceptualize this any longer.
