If you want them to stop doing it, leave it legal and encourage it. When enough bike riders die as a result of not paying attention, they'll stop. Or they won't.

How the hell can one text while biking? I bike all the time, and consider myself pretty good at it (navigating tourists in the French Quarter develops some mad skillz.) But I could never manage to text for more than a few seconds without crashing into something or someone.

I can get behind the driving and texting ban. The damage a distracted driver can do is significant up to and including death of others.

But on bicycles? Come on... This sounds like a saving people from themselves busybody law.

Yeah, those laws they're not paying too close attention to are built around the presumption of a 2 ton thing operated by somebody with little instinct for self preservation that can do a hell of a lot of damage to other things and people.

Bikes aren't cars. It does not make sense to hold them rigidly to the same standards.

Yea, because if there's one thing we need in this world it's another perfectly sensible rule that idiots on bikes either ignore or don't have applied to them, right failmitter?

Farking bicyclists around here are already all over the goddamn road, running stop lights and signs and weaving through traffic without signaling their intentions, I can't imagine how much worse they'd be if they got to text on top of all that.

I run into it all the time. Some fat asshole talking on their phone or texting while swerving all over the place. Its rather trivial to knock them over and get away.

California vehicle code basically stipulates that what you can't do in a car you can't do on a bike. Texting and biking is already illegal if my understanding is correct.

Last time I was in the French Quarter some dude obviously stoned out of his gourd was riding a bicycle in circles in the middle of an intersection. It was near the Robert E. Lee statue so the streets were narrow but regulated.

About two blocks from that saw another obviously stoned one just walking down the oncoming traffic lane like it was nothing and he didn't know where he was.

I salute you and your ability to bike the quarter. I'm curious as to how long the first guy I mentioned was able to ride in circles before getting dragged off by a cop, hit, or passed out in a puddle of vomit. My kid was with me, as were my parents, otherwise I may have stayed to watch the show.

I have never seen a cyclist texting while cycling, but I can only imagine that he won't be moving in a straight line, staying in the bike lane, having an awareness of where motorists are, signaling his intent to those motorists, etc. I cycle all the time, and I am embarrassed for responsible cyclists everywhere whenever I see other cyclists being retarded.

The problem is that the douchbag cyclist turns himselve into mush against the side of someone's car, and THEN that someone has to deal with:
1) emotional trauma of being the proximate cause of someone's death
2) panel damage to the car (probably costs him and not the insurance company due to the deductable)
3) increase in premiums from said douchbag insurance company
4) possible ticket/hassle from douchbag cop
5) probable lawsuit from douchbag cyclist's significant others
6) attorney fees from said lawsuit.
7) loss of time from dealing with all the above

Did I miss anything?

Maybe, but I'd still rather not be given extra opportunities to run the morons down. I'll bet the paperwork with the cops takes forever even if it ultimately is the biker's fault.

True story: I was in a the grocery store parking lot a few weeks ago. I noticed a guy walking towards me while texting. I didn't have the room to get around him on either side, as he was right in the middle of the lane, so I simply stopped. He kept walking, oblivious, and almost hit my car, only noticing me at the last moment.

To be fair, "taking out" is a little extreme language. A cyclist does not take out a pedestrian in the same way that a motorist takes out another motorist, cyclist or pedestrian. But I think testing while cycling is a pretty big gamble, considering how super easy it is to stop, type, and resume travel.

If stop-and-go driving is bad for fuel economy, cyclists should be encouraged to stop-and-go-text for the same reason.

Spent 8 months in Chicago back in 2010. The number of people on foot just about anywhere downtown during the day would make biking while paying full attention dangerous. I can't imagine anyone trying to bike around there while texting. /me thinks this law is a good idea.

/Spent a lot of time around Millenium Park and Grant Park on the weekends. Love those places.

Well... no. Consider a situation with a 285 lb cyclist whizzing along at 30 mph on a sidewalk and clipping a 95 lb 98 year old grandma going 2 mph with her walker. Broken hip at a minimum.

At 300 lbs and heavy-boned, I personally enjoy swerving into the paths of douchbag cyclists illegally whizzing silently along the sidewalks and failing to warn pedestrians they are coming up from the rear.

The last time, he got knocked into traffic and needed hospitalization.
