I dated a honey named Sharika. Last year she invited me over 2 her housing development ta watch tha Super Bowl. Im like, damn, I don't really wanna watch this game up in tha projects but she got a fine ass & the ass is a convincing moderator. Plus she like "Bro, I copped me a new HDTV 50"" So I was like "word" and I come to her place. biatch had the TV set up with a coaxial cable running from her DirecTV dish that was nailed into a 2x4 in her window (cable is illegal in tha projects). I was so pissed cuz that ain't right 2 throw a SB party but only have a SD signal. That's entrapment & tha biatch probably bouth tha set on EBT anywayz. She gave me some love, tho. And when that was done I bailed & went 2 Mabel J's. He slangs rocks so his shiat is state of tha motherfarkin art. Prob should have gone thurrr 1st but Mabel's a dude.

You again.

1) Turn off scaling/stretching. People aren't really that wide.

2) Turn off the motion-averaging. Otherwise everything looks like a soap opera filmed on videotape.

There, I just fixed 90% of new sets with a crappy looking picture.

To be fair, the FM that we're supposed to R is usually completely devoid of any information that would tell the user why they should adjust a given option. I found this article mildly informative.

FYI, all (AFAIK) Pixar DVD and Blu Ray discs have a setup tool in the special features. One for picture and one for surround sound. The picture one does all the adjustments mentioned in TFA, without needing to buy the special disc.

Reading that article made me fell like the author was screaming "LOOK, JUST BUY THE FREAKIN' DISNEY'S WORLD OF WONDER BLU RAY DISC ALREADY!!!!!"

I don't think all of them do. I know that some of the Toy Story DVDs don't have it. Incredibles does, and I always use it to calibrate our new TVs or a friend's if they need it done for them. Actually I think that's just the excuse I use so I can watch it again. Unfortunately I don't have the blue filter to use but that's fairly easy to tweak once you get a decent HD signal on the set.

And half the people with HDTVs still have their directv or cable boxes connected via the "Channel 3/4" output or NTSC composite.

Article is bullshiat. The right way to setup your HDTV and/or stereo is to ask your AV geek friends to come over. Hell, they'll probably pay you for the privilege of setting it up.

I believe on some sets it's called anti-judder or something similar. Not sure why anyone would want a movie to look like it was shot on a home camcorder. I like movies to look like movies.

Considering how much some of these things cost you mean they don't come with ambient light sensors to tweak their own brightness/contrast?

Really?

If it looks fine out of the box, don't bother changing anything.

You can go nuts trying to ask yourself if this or that adjustment actually looks better than the original. Odds are it's a lateral move at best.

2012-02-01 07:56:17 PM
One of the first things you should do is turn down the brightness. Since it fades over time, you have room to turn it up to compensate.

But that would add $12 to the price. Now I don't know about you, but if I'm spending $800+ on a TV, I'm going to go for the one that is $12 cheaper and adjust my own brightness.

I've got it worse. I've been caught adjusting peoples tvs when they go to the bathroom or something. Not just scaling either, brightness, contrast, color...

I used this Guide (new window) for my monitor. (Actually I cheated, I just used settings that a reviewer for my new monitor used). But good for other stuff.

2012-02-01 09:44:52 PM
1. turn everything automatic off. "cinemotion", etc. never improve anything.

2. turn everything down. the set is probably way to bright, contrast way too high, and color way too saturated. it's your house, not a showroom floor.

3. somewhere you have a dvd with a thx setup on it. just do that, it's pretty much good enough unless you're a a/v perfectionist

4. good god, don't stretch SD!

5. if you can choose a "warm" white balance, do it

6. use component or hdmi for everything. the cheap cables work just fine. if you're spending more than $20, you're getting ripped off, unless you have some sort of crazy long cable run (like from a centralized wiring closet) and actually need to be worried about signal loss. Monoprice is your friend.

Your tv may seem dim for a while, but you'll get used to it pretty quickly, and then every other improperly configured TV you see will drive you nuts.....

Stretching by itself doesn't bother me, but when TVs are set to dynamically stretch (more stretch on the sides than in the middle) it drives me up the wall. I notice this a lot on airplanes with an inflight movie.

Do you mean details of price or about these things in general? i was a little surprised by that Amazon price, although i wouldnt call what i paid on ebay insanely cheap.

In general tho, a colorimeter is not an alternative to a correctly adjusted TV, you will still need to do that before applying the device.

When used on a laptop screen with fewer user adjustments you might see a dramatic effect, especially with cheaper laptops where the hue may naturally be off. On high end TVs the effect starts to diminish which makes me slightly nervous about recommending one. The reason this thread even exists is that most people are oblivious to the subtleties of picture quality and simply dont know what theyre missing, and quite often still dont care when they do.

In my case shadow detail was very much increased, and initially the reduction in contrast took some getting used to.

If you are the kind of person who cares enough to adjusts the brightness each time you view a new disc, then a colorimeter is for you!

Thus far ive been able to resist ringing peoples doorbells and offering to fix their TVs that i can see through their windows while im out walking the dog. My FIL bought a 42" LG LED SmartTV, top of the line... had it set somehow that the picture was letterboxed horizontally and vertically, little picture in the middle of the screen... So you can say you have a nice tv?

I watch my cable like that, and some DVDs, because TCM has a habit of showing a lot of Widescreen films, and I only get their SD feed (13 bucks extra a month, are you nuts!?). Some of my DVDs are non-anamorphic, so they don't stretch. Can't replace them with BD or even anamorphic DVDs because they just don't exist.

I have two Blu-ray players hooked up to my TV, as well as my desktop. Desktop is for gaming and PVRs of TCM. Desktop has BD burninator in it though, and does get some use for BD playback, but really, it's more for making BDs. Blu-ray player 1 is a Region a, while Blu-ray Player 2 is a hack job into a Region B. I still watch a lot of DVDs because a lot of stuff I have isn't available in HD, and probably never will be. Catalogue titles get no love really, it's all new, shiatty stuff.
