Sure, Australia--introduce another non-native species. After all, it's going so well with the rabbits.

And when the elephants and rhinos breed like rats, what will they import to eat the rhinos and elephants?

Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.

Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?

Skinner: No problem. We simply release wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.

Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?

Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.

Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!

Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

Has this idea ever worked out well? Anywhere?

Australia, the country that never learns.

Then they're just going to have to get bigger, more aggressive elephants to cull the population of these ones when they become a problem...

Yes, because this worked out so well with the cane toads

I wish they'd update this gif. Cane toads have already made it to Darwin.

If only pandas ate grass, Australia could import them as mowers, and not work about any population explosion, out competing the less well adapted natives to extinction.

If it helps the elephant and rhino populations I'm for it. And we'll be trolling paleontologists a million years in the future.

If they have grass they need to get rid of, they should have imported Cheech and Chong, Spiccoli, a bunch of Rastafarians, and the bulk of us Farkers.

Seems reasonable. The rhino and elephant population will be held in check by Australia's dropbears, nature's most feared predators.

It should be fun when they spill over into Germany.

It actually is kind of an interesting idea. Mostly because I know that poaching of rhinos and elephants continues to be out of control. Besides, people introducing "exotic species" to new lands is not a new idea... the wild horses of today are not native to North America, but I bet most people don't know that.

Then again, I wouldn't want to have introduced elephants running around in my backyard.

Elephants and maybe rhinoceroses could be introduced to Australia to chomp on an invasive African grass that also causes wildfires

Are you sure that's the word you're looking for, Mr. France-Presse?

all the good names are gone: brigid_fitch: Sure, Australia--introduce another non-native species. After all, it's going so well with the rabbits.

And the aborigines.

The aborigines and dingoes lived in Australia for tens of thousands of years without any effect on the continent.

So the elephants and rhinos eat the grass, but then lions and tigers are imported to cull the heards of said animals. But then the lions and tigers become a problem, so a intestinal parasite is released to cull the lions and tigers. But the ticks that transmit the parasite only live in a certain type of African wildgrass.....
The circle of life.

2012-02-01 02:27:33 PM
I think elephants and rhinos would be easier to spot than cane toads and rabbits.

It's fairer to say that the mustangs were reintroduced to their ancestral range. Horses are actually originally native to the Americas.
