Don't all of your gamer friends buy 60-inch HD televisions for 4400 dollars? I know mine do.

I am now working to eliminate the need for a Bloomberg terminal at work as a result of this article. In an interesting twist, the terminal is an incredibly expensive yet unproductive product.

I did buy the 65-inch TV, but it was only $1800 at the time (and is now significantly cheaper) because I went with DLP. But that means I rarely go to the movies, so over the course of the life of the television, I'll probably save nearly as much as if I'd purchased something smaller and still went (say, $800 for the TV, plus $160/year for six years of movies, though I'll likely keep the TV longer)

And playing life-size first person shooters is fun :D

The point of the original piece was to be as ridiculous as possible so people would keep clicking through the slideshow.

Writing a "rebuttal" and linking to the piece prominently is basically saying to Bloomberg and author Jennifer Prince "Job well done, here's some more clicks!".

Shockingly enough, non-gamers already own chairs and TVs. With speakers too. And some even own computers!

I always enjoyed video games like Metal Marines, Warcraft, Dark Alliance 1 and 2, etc.

However, as I got older, I started to get the feeling that all the time I spent developing characters and grinding out levels could be spent doing almost the same thing in real life to make my life better.

I think I came to this realization when I was playing GTA with a friend. I had my character in the gym lifting weights, and I realized I could actually, you know, BE AT the gym. Granted, you shouldn't apply EVERYTHING you see in that game.

The funny thing is, I think a lot of gamers are developing skills they don't know they have. Let's say you get really good at Civilization/SimCity type games, or RPG games that make you build attributes to apply in different situations. If you take that way of thinking and learn some basic financial jargon, you could do pretty well building your personal investments.

Or, if you play a lot of different games, and learn them quickly, that means you could learn new computer software pretty quickly. If you're willing to cut some video game time to learn new software, that helps you advance at a lot of jobs.

It can be tough to figure out the true cost of gaming. Most people own a computer and a television even if they do not game so attributing the entire cost of a computer or a flat screen television to gaming is wrong. That $1,200 gaming computer also works for internet, word processing and any other non-gaming related computer tasks. You would have spent $600 on a computer anyway so only the remaining $600 is what you spent to on "gaming". The same could be even more true for consoles. You might go out and buy a more expensive television specifically for gaming but then again you may already own a suitable set and not find the need to spend any additional money.

And what about electricity to power all your incredibly expensive toys? And a house to put them in, that's thousands of dollars a month!

Don't you see that if you were just willing to live at your place of business and spend all your free time staring at motivational posters you would save MILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR??????

If I spend more than $300 a year on games and goodies, I think that's a high count.

Will I replace my Mac soonish? Yup. Not for gaming, but because she's an old girl and deserves a dignified death. I won't be getting a brand new Mac to replace her, but one that will be able to run SW:TOR? Certainly. And I'll pick up TOR sometime this summer.

Will I pick up some games for the 360? Probably. Mass Effect 3 is coming out soon, and Amalur looks like it might be fun too.

The original article was supposed to scare folks who have gamer friends and relatives, and show how irresponsible they were being for putting cash into a market that Bloomberg doesn't necessarily understand, save that this "new" market they predicted would blow away and die about 25 years ago, and hasn't deigned to pay attention to those predictions, and keeps getting stronger.

Out of touch article by an out of touch publication designed to massage folks who don't understand an industry and mock it to drive up page views. Brilliant.

Considering I just built a pretty sweet gaming PC for around $2k, I thought Bloomberg was full of crap.

AMD Phenom II (8-core)
ASUS M5A97 Mobo
8GB RAM
Asus nVidia 570 GPU
2x 3TB Seagate Barracuda (SATA III) in a RAID 1 config.
760W PSU
Thermaltake MK-1 Case

I didn't replace my monitor...it's a 23" and I can't fit a larger one in my computer desk...and to be honest, I don't really need one. I didn't replace my Keyboard or my mouse as both are less than a year old.

2012-02-01 02:49:55 PM
A few years back I purchased a DLP projector (720p) with a surround sound system for $1500. Screen quality is good and the size of my screen is around 5'x 7".

Because the room is dark enough, I'd definitely go with a DLP protector again. Quality is very good and for the price can't be beat.

My gaming PC cost me $360 refurbished. Granted, I carried over a Radeon 4870 from my old PC but it still works great.

Also, he's right about internet. 105Mbps is ridiculous. I had an 8Mb down/2Mb up connection in my old apartment and it was enough for me to stream Netflix while my girlfriend played Left 4 Dead online.

I am... confused about one thing.

If I was buying a TV to, primarily, play video games on, with a XB360. Why would I even bother getting one capable of 1080p? The 360 can't go much above 720p@30fps from what I've seen. Hell most of the HD broadcasts I've seen have been at 720p.

So you can get a WAY cheaper TV. Then spend the extra on something useful. Like beer, I suppose you could get some chips and a bottle of sweet sherry for the lady but beer and lots of it.

So what am I missing?

Yeah, a friend of mine had a 120" setup in a rental house (long story) that was fresh in my mind when we were shopping for a larger house due to a larger family. Told the wife I wanted a nice-sized media room, didn't care about the rest of the house, it could be however she wanted it to be. hah

I went with the largest screen that would fit while still having enough fL. Still, it took 2 years to fully kit out, as I preferred to pay for things as I could instead of running up debt. And I'm still not done, but the core (7.1, screen, seats, projector, media server) is there, so I'm content for now.

/Don't give up the dream! :)

Good luck finding a TV over 30" that is native 720P anymore, but there's also the concept of upscaling and this (depending on what component you've got performing it) may improve your picture quality through clever anti-aliasing style tricks. But you're right, the current gen of consoles can't even really use the HD resolutions and especially at those TV's refresh rates as it is.

Ideally though this is where your ability to bargain the cost down by splitting with your girlfriend and sell her on how much better the Mamma Mia bluray would look on a cool new 1080P LED vs whatever you've got, or in your case well I dunno. Do you like the Mamma Mia bluray? ;)

A choice few 360 games can do 1080p via hdmi, and I would recommend it just for the sake of future proofing.

There are only 2 - 3 factories making panels (or were). It's highly likley those knock-offs will have a Sharp or LG or Samsung panel in them and attendant controlling circuitry. They may not look as nice or have some of the features of a on-brand unit but the picture quality will be the same.

I'd swear my Technika had Sharp written on the panel's PCB when I poked my nose in there.

Did a quick lookup since that holds interest to me as well, unfortunately it looks like while all the live acting was done in a format that could translate to HD most of the CGI was only stored in 4:3 format, sounds like it'd take a tremendous amount of work. Hrm, would you settle for a ST:TNG in HD? ;)

At one fleeting moment in time, he was the best Quake 3 player in the world. This was before video game tournaments were broadcast 24/7 on cable, so it was kind of a big deal. Then came the endorsements.

What brand/model? Straight DLP or is it LED based? Have you had trouble with it?

I only ask because I bought a 56" LED DLP and it's in the shop for the third or fourth time. Starting to contemplate a replacement... I got mine for like 60% off, but the cost of repairs is starting to really eat into my savings. :(

Hmm... having mostly read the Tom's Guide article and skimmed the first couple pages of the Bloomberg article you know what I think the silliest part is?

That Bloomberg thinks the kind of person who will drop $4,000 on a TV for games is only going to buy 1 console, and it's the XBox360 at that!

I mean, everything else aside how many gamers do you know who only have one console? Unless they're PC gamers... which is really the other dumb part: Assuming the PC gamer who buys the ultimate gaming rig also cares about console games. Yeah, sometimes that overlaps but a lot of PC gamers who _would_ shell out for the best PC think console gaming is for chumps.

Otherwise, I think this Tom guy hit the nail on the head. Bloomberg made a great wishlist... but very few of us are spending anywhere near that kind of money!
