I use a program on a daily basis that only understands capital letters.

As someone who learned to touch type on a Selectric, I cannot sympathize with really any of these gripes, especially given the number of keyboards that are available on the market, and how easily it is to reconfigure things with shortcuts.

I'm a fairly lazy sort, and I can't say that typing an ellipsis is so damn hard. Nor depressing shift while typing another letter. If this drives you nuts, then you are thinking about it too damn hard. It's just typing, and it's a skill that pretty much everyone should have.

THERE NEEDS TO BE A SARCASM FONT. THAT IS ALL.

When I was in college, I had this super-old professor who insisted we code in FORTRAN, and as convention dictated, caps lock was used quite frequently.

I always wished there was window-specific caps lock, so I could cap it up in my fortran code without making it look like I was yelling at my friends when I sent them IMs asking for help.

Yeah, that would be a really great idea.

I really think keyboards should have open and close quotes keys. MS Word and other text editors wreak havoc on software documentation and text copy/pasted into web applications by automatically replacing neutral quotes with characters that really just should have been there already.

If I want to enclose something in parenthesis, braces, or brackets, my programming language expects me to use separate start and end delimiters, and my keyboard helps with that. Why not the same for strings?

Also, I use the insert button a lot. When I had to get a new keyboard when I started to work from home because the insert button was removed and a 2X sized delete button was in it's place. Annoying as fark.

I want the ability to select lower case text and convert it to upper case and vice versa. BECAUSE SOMETIMES YOU REALIZE THAT YELLING IS MORE EFFECTIVE.

In newer versions of Microsoft Word, you can do that with Ctrl-Shift-A, but I don't think there's a way to go from stuff originally typed in caps lock to regular.

Shift-F3 toggles between all caps, title case, and lower case in Word. Very useful, aside from the fact that it capitalizes words it shouldn't (a, and, the, etc.).

I just tested it and works! Thanks to you both!

My letters to the editor will NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN.

I agree with getting rid of capslock, as well as putting ! and ? on the same key (I'd make ? unshifted and ! shifted, though).

I'd also put / and \ on the same key (slash and shift-slash. I hate telling someone to type "backslash," and then having to say "the slash above the enter key."). I would then put pipe or vertical bar (|) on the 1 key.

In fact, I just might put in my two cents worth (btw, the cent sign should be a shifted dollar sign, that would be kind of cool) and post this on Slate's board.

Yes, let's get rid of the insert key because this retard might hit it by accident and mess up his writing. boo farking hoo.

I'm surprised he didn't go after the pipe/back-slash key while he was at it.

Pretty much. To be fair, schools are doing away with touch typing classes, which is a damn shame, because folks are tossing formating documents properly as well.

Eddie Adams from Torrance: I miss my Sparc keyboard with the COPY/PASTE buttons on left side.

Yea, but then Caps Lock and Ctrl (?) are reversed.

Had a few coworkers who remapped their PC keyboards to follow the sun behavior on that, so Caps Lock was Ctrl, vice-versa.

Those people were crazy.

Me, I miss F11 through F14.

2. One change that should have been made to the keyboard decades ago is the addition of a dedicated em-dash key. An em-dash is meant to indicate an abrupt change of thought within the context of a sentence. Writers of all stripes use them often-sometimes too often-but they can be a real pain in the carpal to type.

This.

If you lock your account out because you're too stupid to check the caps lock status light after two failed login attempts, then you're too gods-damned stupid to have a keyboard in the first place.

Calmamity: Kill it yourself, ya lazy bums.

That's too hard for them, and then they don't have the "real estate" freed up by the key, although they biatch about how it's location causes it to be accidentally hit on occasion. Personally, I don't have trouble with CapsLock, it works like it's supposed to for me. Maybe I am over-qualified to write for Slate?
