Premiums for the Medicare program that allows recipients to choose private insurance have dropped an average of 7% while enrollment has grown by 10%. The premium decline exceeded that predicted in September by HHS analysts, who said the premiums would drop 4%. Since 2010, records show, premiums have fallen 16% and enrollment has increased 17%.

Worried? No. Hopeful? Yes.

/and not the crap discussed in TFA
//and, no, this isn't a "liberal" stance, it should be the rallying cry of conservatives everywhere who want to keep a few extra dollars in their pockets

The loss has been socialized for a long time.

The elderly (Medicare), the very poor (Medicaid), active military, inmates, and poor veterans. Everyone else, the health insurance cartels can make money from them. Everyone else will always be beholden to the health insurance companies. As long as people continue to support the status quo and be satisfied with their excuses, they're going to take it up the ass from the health insurance companies.

Now? As if you haven't been paying for other peoples' health care since the creation of Medicare, Medicaid, the requirement for ER's to take all comers regardless of wallet size, or when the government started providing doctors for those public-employee teatsucking soldiers?

My family and I are quite thankful for the "Socialized" health insurance we receive from the state at the moment.

We'd be farked if we didn't have it...

So many mean-spirited and greedy people in this country these days. It's pathetic.

it bugs me that the term socialism got so bastardized by idiots like this and the kindred idiots found on the right. as if anytime the government pays for anything or even simply regulates some event it's f*cking socialism. it makes it hard to have a thoughtful discussion when people, simply to create bias, adulterate terms to where they are unrecognizable.

The dialogue from the American left was "free market medicine has failed" despite, you know, things like Medicare, Medicaid, subsidized HMO's, the FDA, and subsidized/socialized public state options for health care being in existence FOR DECADES. It's probably the biggest intellectually dishonest argument ever made since Bush/Cheney's argument on Iraq's non-existant WMD's.

So the fact that those socialized programs worked better than their free market alternatives means the the free market hasn't failed?

Point made, but just the same principles applies to "free market" whenever the government doesn't regulate or subsidize something (per my previous post). We seem to be a nation stuck on hyperbole to drive arguments (a quick look at any Fark political thread is one piece of evidence on that, at the very least).

Some people long for the good old days when if you couldn't afford a medical procedure you had the decency to die without complaining about it.

True story bro...

Last weekend I was called in at midnight to sew up an unfortunate gentleman who was thrown through a windshield. He suffered severe facial trauma (pretty much every bone in his face was broken), a ruptured globe (ruptured eyeball) on the right, and what appears to be a crushed optic nerve on the left, complete with massive intra and sub-retinal hemorrhage. Along with the facial trauma team, I sewed up his eye rupture (no, it likely won't recover... too much damage), his lids, face, etc. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to fix his left eye (even though the eye is intact, the nerve and retina appear to be beyond repair). All in all I've probably spent 7 or eight hours with him between the ER, OR, and ICU.

He doesn't have insurance. He's blind. He'll be in the hospital for weeks. Yes, he most likely will live.

So fearmongers... what should be done with him? Let him die? Throw him on the street? Should I receive compensation for my work? If so, who should pay me? What about the hospital? What about the other trauma surgeons? Nurses? Ambulance Drivers?

I don't want to be a government employee, I'm not for a completely socialized system, but we DO need some sort of catastrophic safety net, not just for patients, but for providers, hospitals, etc. His hospitalization will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars... you'll end up paying for it through higher charges, and in turn higher premiums on your insurance. All with an extra 30% overhead for middlemen.

/real world is a lot more complicated than most arguments on Fark.

"Hey, you're young and swingin',
No time to think about tomorrow
But there ain't no way to deny it
Some day, you're gonna buy it.
Plan today,
Go with Ferryman tomorrow!
Ferryman, Ferryman,
he's the man with the plot, the man with the plan!
Ferryman, Ferryman,
He's the mortician man who loves you!
A lot!"

You might not like the term but it is accurate. If you're required to go on in some social expense by law that is a socialized system.

Inasmuch as your point makes no sense, I did want to point this out:
"free market medicine" hasn't failed - from the perspective of the insurers. They're rolling in cash.
"free market medicine" has failed from the perspective of the consumers. And they're farked over whether they're insured or not, they're just farked maybe a little less if insured.

I feel it's an important distinction to make - the market hasn't failed, but the "goods" it supposedly sells has.
