Thanks for reinforcing the idea that the GOP doesn't give a damn about the poor.

2012-02-01 09:21:07 AM
"I'm not concerned about the very poor, we have a safety net there," Romney said. "If it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich, they're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of America, the 90, 95 percent of Americans who, right now, are struggling, and I'll continue to take that message across the nation."

You know how I know he has no idea about how the other 99% live?

2012-02-01 09:25:53 AM
we have a safety net there

You mean that safety net that conservatives are always biatching about? The one that, according to some of my fellow Farkers, lets the poor buy Escalades with gold spinners?

2012-02-01 09:30:10 AM
The "very poor" get to vote too, right?

2012-02-01 09:37:31 AM
15,000,000 children are included in that poor demographic. Keep up the good work Rombone.

2012-02-01 09:46:52 AM
At least he's finally telling the truth about himself.

ManateeGag: The "very poor" get to vote too, right?

I don't think they were a hotbed of support for Romney before that.

2012-02-01 09:54:16 AM
Jesus cared about the poor. Further proof that mittens is a cultist terrorist bent on taking over America for SATAN. (Who says cap locks is useless.)

2012-02-01 09:55:41 AM
He's part of the middle class. Of course he would care about his own demographic.

2012-02-01 09:56:08 AM
If I were Mitt Romney, I'd converse through a ventriloquist dummy and let it take the bad rap over my twisted words.

Yes the same safety net that Mitt Romney said "Cutting welfare spending dramatically, I don't think will hurt the poor" about.

2012-02-01 09:58:12 AM
It's a safety net made of bootstraps and the power of positive thinking.

What a sack of shiat.

Toss enough people into the net, and it will break.

2012-02-01 10:00:55 AM
Again, I'm gonna have to defend Romney here. You need to look at the full quote. He said he's not concerned about them *because* we provide for them.

You can argue if that's true or not, but he wasn't saying "fark those people.

While I agree I think there's an implicit subtext which is

"I have assumed that those people are fine because we have a safety net. I've never bothered to look into whether a) the safety net works to keep them fine b) it's actually true that they are fine because I don't ever think about them.

I disagree. I think in essence he did say that. A safety net is inadequate. There has to be opportunity to leave the net. And what about the circumstance that force people into the net? This is a rough approximation of Cain's "Blame Yourself" message.

The same provisions that he doesn't know a thing about (new window) but wants to cut them anyway if it means keeping funding for the DoD (new window).

But as I pointed out Romney's policy is to make dramatic cuts to those programs. He's very much saying "Fark those people". That's of course giving Romney the benefit of the doubt that he even considers the poor to be people.

Absolutely. But that's a somewhat different form of assholishness than the headline indicates.

In a way he's right- the poorest people have more access to safety nets like Medicaid, while the working poor may not be poor enough to qualify. Unfortunately, he and his party support further eroding any safety net.

Exactly. And on top of their endless mission to destroy the safety net, they're doing everything they can to tilt the playing field further and further away from the working poor. So, when those folks do finally lose their grip and fall off the grid, their will be no net to catch them.

And the GOP is just fine with that.

2012-02-01 10:26:27 AM
Vote Romney, because he doesn't give a flying fark about you.

2012-02-01 10:27:20 AM
Romney has a bumper sticker that says, "I have to destroy jobs for millions because millions on welfare are depending on me!"

Right next to the one that says, "If there's dogshiat on your window, you're too close!"

Or just as accurate...

"Mitt Romney follows up his decisive Florida primary win with another shot to the foot: I'm not concerned about the very rich...that's what the Wall Street bailouts are for."

Imagine that. It is almost as bad a parsing as "I like to fire people" lie.

At some point the argument reduces to the form "less rapey than Ben Roethlisberger"

I am less rapey than Ben Roethlisberger. I am the 99%.

Bad parsing of an already bad statement. He's so dumb when it comes to understanding how people regard him. If he expects to get any traction in attacking Obama over class warfare, he needs much better message discipline.

Romney favorability went from a +9 to a -18 in January. Link (new window)

Absolutely. Similar to Gingrich and his "Entertainer in chief" followed by "I won't sing for you." Probably not meant as racist, but Jesus man, you know that politics is perception!!!

As for Mitt, he should say it differently.

"I don't care to eliminate the safety net for the poor, and I don't care about helping the rich, they can take care of themselves."

There. Fixed. Now I can apply to be his handler.

That's not Romney's policy. He has stated that he want to make "dramatic cuts" to welfare. You can keep pretending otherwise, but Romney does want to dismantle the safety net and doesn't care about the consequences to the poor in the slightest.

2012-02-01 11:00:40 AM
Republicans is fine if you're a multi-millionaire
Democrats is fair if all you own is what you wear
Neither of 'em's really right cos neither of 'em care
'Bout that hot-plate heaven, cos they ain't been there!

/wonder what ole Frank would think of this election - he referred to the '88 election as the "Olympics of Banality"

2012-02-01 11:02:17 AM
The safety net Romney is talking about is that poor folks kids can join the military. The reporter just did not follow up.

2012-02-01 11:03:07 AM
You must worry about the poor 24/7 in this country. Even if you just wrapped them up in a new blanket in their Section 8 housing, forced a bunch of food stamps down their throats and provided free day care for their herd of children.

You must always worry about the poor. Damn attention-whoring poor.

2012-02-01 11:03:34 AM
Mitt Romney is a guy speaking like his party doesn't attack the safety net for the poor on a daily basis. He's also speaking like a guy whose tax plan isn't to the right of George W's.

2012-02-01 11:03:35 AM
Asperger's. It's the only explanation.

I'm beginning to wonder why his handlers let him out in public at all.

That quote's gonna show up in some commercials in the fall.

subby, Mitt Romney referred to the "Democrat Party".

You used the grammatically-correct adjective "Democratic". Republicans use "Democrat Party" because it sounds harsher or negative.

Mitt is using the approved Republican phrasing.

Weird, but there it is.

2012-02-01 11:06:11 AM
And yet millions of poor voters will vote Republican because they might be rich someday, because abortion and socialism, etc.
