Bravo headline!

Interesting. I'd really like to know more about this and the mechanisms in play as they become better-studied.

FTFA:"Drinking diet soft drinks on a daily basis might increase the risk stroke, heart attack and vascular death, U.S. researchers said."

That looks like the author drinks a lot of diet Coke

I qut drinking Diet cock a year ago. I had one a week ago and almost puked.

Godscrack: I qut drinking Diet cock a year ago. I had one a week ago and almost puked.

Went back to plain' ol regular, then?

I had a 3 per day habit for a very long time. Dropped it January 1 and haven't had one since. I'm still getting headaches although they're only supposed to last for up to 9 days.

I don't feel any different aside from that. It was just time to give it up. I can see going back to a couple per week maybe. I want to really clean my system out first.

I wish the so-called scientists would come out with one simple statement...

"BEING BORN LEADS TO DEATH."

It would save a lot of time.

So you DO NOW WANT to drink diet cock?

Or most of the people that drink diet coke are fatties thinking they are doing something constructive about their weight problem.

They found an association, not a causation.

I'm guessing next they will discover that fatties drink more soda, have more strokes. *shrug*

Some excellent typos in here. I larfed.

Headline: "Diet soda linked to stroke, heart attack."
Article: "More research is required before we can link diet soda consumption to vascular events"

So there's that.

I'm certainly hoping this is the case. I love carbonated caffeine, and I can't be drinking a gallon of HFCS a day. That's a lot of calories.

Exposure to starlight may lead eventually to death. More studies, and a big fat grant, needed to find cause.

Probably related to the high sodium content to make aspartame taste less like ass and more like cane sugar?

I'd also venture that more fatties drink diet "because it's healthier". I'll keep drinking my moderate intake of cold caffeine until an actual causal link is found thanks.

I'd put money that anyone who drinks a lot of soda (multiple cans per day), of any kind, probably has some unhealthy habits elsewhere.

2012-02-01 12:43:23 PM
However, light diet soft drink users -- those who drink between one a month and six a week -- and those who chose regular soft drinks were not more likely to suffer vascular events, the study found.
"Our results suggest a potential association between daily diet soft drink consumption and vascular outcomes."

So I can drink six a week, but I'd better not drink seven?

You know, the funny thing about these studies is there's always the implication that diet soda is somehow worse than regular. What's better: getting shot in the face, or getting shot in the heart? You could start a thousand studies detailing different calibers used, male vs female, time of day, slant of the universe and come to find that your chances are better for getting shot in the heart, but either way, both suck and you've lowered your chance for long survival considerably. Either don't get shot, or realize you're killing yourself.

I think the calories not gained is more beneficial, but then you have to think about how your body deals with all the junk it can't process. It's poison either way.

/been telling myself I'll kick the habit after high school, after college, now after grad school. Perhaps I'll wait until after my unborn kids are ten or twelve. I'll need to stay awake for those early years.

TheDirtyNacho: I'd put money that anyone who drinks a lot of soda (multiple cans per day), of any kind, probably has some unhealthy habits elsewhere.

Most likely. In some cases it's a caffeine habit, reduced calorie drinks are probably better than office coffee for me. Certainly better than swilling down a couple hundred empty calories of HFCS.

Yeah let's think about this logically for a second. Which is more likely to cause a stroke, an artificial sweetener proven to be safe and approved by every regulatory body on the planet including California and only challenged by the same loons who believe in chemtrails, or a stimulant that not only stresses the entire body but prevents you from getting a restful night's sleep?

It's the caffeine.

2012-02-01 01:02:50 PM
Subsequent contributors to our conversation will probably mock me for my stance, but I don't let my kids have any artificial sweeteners. They can have honey, maple syrup, or good old fashioned sugar. My reasoning: I know what too much sugar will do to them. It will make them fat and they shouldn't be consuming that much sweet stuff anyway.

I'm not Food Nanny. I'm a Food Mom.

Diet soda and coffee are my only two vices. I've gotten healthy and eat remarkably well aside from those two things. I don't know that I can give them up or that I want to.

I stay away from sugar, I stay away from fried foods, I don't eat too much... Just let me have my Diet Coke each day.

People drinking diet sodas may also be eating a low fat diet consisting of whole grains, frankenfoods, and industrial seed oils masquerading as "health foods".

If a scientist introduces you to his significant other, all he's saying is that he's pretty sure not dating her by accident.

2012-02-01 01:24:58 PM
I gave up Diet everything this new years and I do feel MUCH better!

I'm less groggy in the mornings and have a clearer head.

I hate regular soda and I'm learning to take my coffee without sweetener.

I don't believe it's the caffeine because I still have a regular cup of coffee every morning, just no splenda or sweet and low.

Personally, I think it's going to be something that bothers certain people, but not everyone.

DId they examine the connection between diet soft drinks and unhealthy meals?

Because personally, the only time I ever drink a diet softdrink, it's alongside something unhealthy, like fast food, chips.

For most people that don't have the diabeetus, diet drinks are a way of softening the blow of a corresponding bad decision.
