Coincidentally, that's how you fast track Canadian citizenship.

Canadians drive a Zamboni better when they're drunk.

Canadian Parliament is currently considering legislation to make him an officer in the Order of Canada.

Of course this story isn't from Canada. Such incidents aren't newsworthy up here.

The Minnesota Court of Appeals did, however, say in 2011 that a physically disabled man driving a motorized scooter could not be convicted of drunken driving. The law makes an exception for "an electric personal assistive mobility device" and the court said the scooter was a wheelchair, not a motor vehicle.

If I am ever in Minnesota I am definitely buying me an electric scooter!!!

You can't drive your riding lawnmower, in your own yard, while drunk in Minnesota? Then I guess the terrorists have won.

Ok, who hasn't driven a Zamboni drunk... I had a frat brother who worked the pro shop at the college ice arena. When he had closing duty, he would let us in and we would go sharpen our skates and then play hockey, drunk. We erased our trespassing activity by firing up the Zamboni and resurfacing the ice before we left.

Canadians, by virtue of being Canadian, have the ability to keep the zamboni off the boards while drunk. It's a racial perk, kinda like the Global Blinders and Superiority Complex that Americans get.

Oh, and here is the Zamboni song, from Minnesota's own Gear Daddies.

Link (new window)

Sing along if you know the words.

Well I went down to the local arena
Asked to see the manager man
He came from his office, said, "Son can I help you?"
I looked at him and said, "Yes you can..."

I want to Drive the Zamboni...hey
I want to Drive the Zamboni...Yes I do!

Now ever since I was young it's been my dream
That I might drive a Zamboni machine
I'd get the ice just as slick as could be
And all the kids would look up to me

I want to drive the Zamboni...hey
I want to drive the Zamboni...Yes I do!

Now the manager said, "Son, I know it looks keen
But that right there is one expensive machine
And I've got Smokey who's been driving for years."
About that time I broke down in tears.

Cause I want to drive the Zamboni...hey
I want to drive the Zamboni...Yes I do!

Former Z driver here. I can say that while you do become proficient at cutting the ice, remember you have a 3-4 ton (depending on how loaded the snow/water tanks are) you still have that much weight, inertia and kinetic energy moving across ICE. Doing this with little kids around? Not smart. It's easy enough to lose control of one if you're not paying attention, let alone slurring/stumbling drunk.

On a bright note, I hear there's an opening for a Zamboni driver at this rink if anyone wants to apply. :-)

I was so surpised this wasn't in Michigan. Have heard of a guy who had a suspended license for DWI was charged again for DWI driving a snowmobile and driving with a suspended. You don't need a license to drive a snowmobile, but it seems you can't drive one while suspended. Would've helped if he stayed on private land.

What kind of field sobriety tests do they give you for drunken Zamboni driving? Do they make you skate the circles, do ladders without puking, be able to cross-over backwards? Do the referees give the tests?

This is important.

Of course this didn't happen in Canada! Up here, you need a minimum blood-alcohol level before you're allowed to drive the zamboni.

Former Z driver here too. I feel like missed out by not driving the Zam while drunk but yeah, pretty stupid to be doing that with little kids around.
