It's the "posting it online where students can see it" part that causes a problem.

Many, if not most, U.S. states have policies about revoking a teaching certificate for "immoral conduct"/"unfit moral character" ( as well as alcoholism, felony convictions, etc. ), including New York, California, and Illinois, and being known as the teacher who stars in pornography with former students is definitely going to be an issue in dealing with teenagers. I'd be surprised if Canadian teachers aren't subject to similar rules.

Yeah, they'll use any shred of an excuse to make judgments against any consenting adult anywhere caught having teh sex and get them fired from their job if they can, and teachers usually make easy targets.

Is it reasonable to argue that a teacher believed that teenagers do not look at porn and did not understand the problems it would create for his employer if they found it?

It seems to me that it's not important what should have happened. It's important what he should have known was going to happen anyway. If I know a compact car is parked illegally, I can't get to crush their car and kill everyone inside to make way for my truck just because the compact car should not have been in my way.

I still don't see the problem here. I realize that his students are going to mock him for it, but morally he's done nothing wrong. We're all human, and we all have sex (except some Farkers). He didn't fark a current student. He didn't fark someone under-age. The idea that just because he's a teacher he's not allowed to get his freak on is just asinine.

The question of whether or not he's done something morally wrong is subjective. The state of Illinois, for example, denied white supremacist Matthew Hale the license to practice law because he was a Nazi. Being a Nazi is not illegal, it's just widely viewed as fundamentally immoral. Certainly, many people would argue that the production and distribution of pornography is inherently immoral for any number of reasons (at least one of which would be the issue of material posted on the internet being readily available to children), and would be horrified if a family member were involved in it.

That said, nobody is saying this guy can't laid. He's completely allowed to get his freak on, even with a former, adult student. He just can't let children watch, and because of the profession he's chosen, he's kind of expected to go a little bit out of his way about that one.

Deucednuisance: Well, thanks for the trenchant, nay, poignant analysis of a situation that is occurring in Australia.

The (blindingly obvious) point was to illustrate that Australia is hardly alone in taking this approach and that it's by no means some kind of recognized norm to accept this conduct among teachers. Thanks for writing, though.

We have enough trouble finding teachers who can teach and won't cheat on the tests. Let's first focus on finding teachers we can hold to a higher competency and ethical standard, and not throw competent and ethical teachers to the wolves over their personal lives.

In the age of the internet, people's personal lives are frequently not private. This will be more and more the case. We need to begin setting the precedent now of simply ignoring people's personal lives as irrelevant to their jobs unless they reflect on matters like propensity for criminal violence, theft, dishonesty, or breach of contract---matters directly relevant to the workplace.

If they fire him, I hope he sues for wrongful termination. They should be praising him for waiting until after she graduated, unlike so many of his peers.
