Indeed. However, if you, as many bored youth (as I once was) had ever tried to smash an old CRT TV set, you'd know that the glass is absurdly thick, nearly an inch at the crown. Not that putting one's head through it wouldn't result in deep lacerations (and tween death, as you so eloquently put it), but rather that the force required to shatter the glass would likely do the same to the skull (also resulting in tween death).

Agreed. I once hit the center of an old t.v. screen with an 8lb sledge hammer and the damn hammer bounced back hard enough to hit me in the shin without breaking the t.v.

Really old TVs didn't have the ultra-thick screen. I remember breaking one when I was a lad. Easy to do, and quite impressive. The trick is to cover it first, to avoid the glass shrapnel.
On the other hand, really old TVs emitted a fair amount of radiation. I'm sure that's why a have a red face.
But it's more likely to have been the claret.
