"Paternos" is so wrong, and yet... so appropriate.

Can't say JoPa doesn't deserve a verb. It's just a shame, because of the good he did is outweighed by the evil he overlooked.

Mike McQueary already admitted he didn't give the details to Joe because he didn't think Joe would understand or be able to really comprehend what he saw. All Joe was told was there was some "abuse" that Mike witnessed.

Joe reported it and now Schultz and Curley are being charged with lying to the grand jury and failing to report the abuse.

Didn't the pope say something the other day like we know too much for our own good these days, or something. Imagine if we'd never known about any of this sh*t. He was ordained in the early 50's. Imagine how much of this sh*t he's swept under the carpets.

Yep, all you have to do is overlook the consistent parade of boys on road trips, Sandusky admitting he showered with boys to cops in 1998, then you need to overlook the sudden resignation of Sandusky in 1999. And of course the emeritus status the University gave him.
Wait there's more!
In 2000 janitors witness Sandusky giving blow jobs to two boys and tell their supervisors.

Paterno was protecting Sandusky, because the Penn State Football program was more important than a few boys from broken homes.

Many parishes distinguish between funds used to pay out damages vs funds that are off-limits for this purpose. I've noticed lots more people donating to the second collection than ever before. I personally only donate to funds that are not used for lawsuit payouts.

The problem is that the RCC is not obligated to spend that money on what they say they are spending it on. State and federal laws state that once you hand money over to a church, the church is free to do whatever they want with it.

I ran into an issue a while ago where I designated a gift for a particular purpose in my church and later found out the used the money to cover salaries when the general fund ran low.. and it was totally legal.

I'll never do that again.

In catholic churches, the second collection is for mission or charity work outside the parish. It's pretty well segregated from diocese funds. Thanks for the warning, I'll check on this.

==========================================================

Clearly you know nothing about Paterno's involvement other than the sensationalized headlines. Joe did everything he was required to do, he followed his chain-of-command. It is not his fault that his superiors failed to follow through and the man got royally screwed in the end. Just goes to show that the nice guys, the folks who do everything right, really do finish last.

No, submitter's definition of Paterno is what I have an issue with

Does it mean covering up child abuse?
or
Dying to avoid prosecution?

Perhaps it's dying to avoid prosecution for covering up child abuse!

Granted, this specific version of the word would only be useful in certain situations, like when referring to the Catholic Church or certain college football programs... so maybe it can be dumbed down to "dying to avoid prosecution".

I rely on the selfish motivations of the priest collecting for the mission program. I also said I'll look into it.

Meanwhile you shovel money at an organization you know full-well is responsible for mass murder. I've only got so many hours in the day and paranoia over corruption in fundraising for charity only gets so much attention.

Fortunately, churches are transparent in how their funding is used, and litigation payouts come from diosiceasan funds, which are traceable by law. You can look it up on any diosiceasan web site. Charts and everything.

Meh, it'll fall on deaf ears. The fact that McQueary was censured by a grand jury for not going to the cops, whereas Paterno was not... not to mention that Bevilacqua was censured not once, but twice, by a grand jury for not only failing to report it to the police, but also because he actively worked to cover it up by moving the priests around from parish to parish as complaints rolled in. None of that factors into the reasoning here.

Yeah, paying what I'm legally obligated in taxes to avoid going to jail is exactly the same as voluntairly giving money to baby-rapers.

/I attach a little sticky-note to my tax returns asking that none of my money should be used to kill brown people. I have faith that the IRS respects my wishes.

Ya, good friend of the family, a Catholic barely hanging on by her fingernails went through something like that; parish priest ripped off the parish funds, went to jail. Parishioners held bake sales, etc to raise replacement money; bishop yoinked that money for his own use elsewhere in the diocese. Local church's roof STILL leaks.

No legal recourse.
