Alex Downing, of Colchester Zoo, said: "Everyone is extremely upset but there was nothing anyone could have done."

Except maybe not let a bird fly around a small enclosure with large predators, moran.

/saw a caracal cat catch and eat a squirrel at the D.C. zoo
/that was one VERY happy cat

I guess the article is a little unclear, but I don't think they intentionally had the bird fly in the lion's enclosure. I assume they were doing the presentation out in the open, between the various enclosures.

Picture of the actual lion. You can see his ribs. He obviously wasn't being fed enough and I don't blame him for eating the owl.

Keepers rushed into the lion enclosure at Colchester Zoo, Essex, but could not save Ash.

Did they
1. Really rush into the lion enclosure?
2. Really think the owl could be saved?

Also, just because

The kids were crying? What kind of pansy-ass shiat is that? They just witnessed one of the greatest shows in nature and they're crying?

Yeah, the article doesn't say, but I really doubt that they were purposefully having the owl fly inside the lion enclosure.

Most likely they were having the owl fly outside the lion pen, and the owl flew in.

More data is needed.

That's what I thought, then I remembered that kids cry at everything. It's the adults that I want to throw into the lion pit.

I honestly might have burst out laughing at the sight of sheltered kids being horrified to tears at the sight of nature being nature.

I think this is sad. Owls are great. But this is stupid:
"But it's in the lion's nature - I have taught Daniel that lions are not fluffy animals."

Look at the picture of the lion. If that animal isn't fluffy, I don't know what is.

So it happened pretty much like this (new window). Only with a bigger cat. And an owl, not a bat. Also it was outside in a lion enclosure and not someone's hallway. And lots of children watched. And it was a different cat from the one that caught it that actually ate the owl. And there-- ah fark it. Just watch the video.

If I ran a large zoo, I'd deliberately over-breed the herbivores and occasionally transfer them to the lion's enclosure.

Same with seals and polar bears.

The whole majesty of nature, throat torn out and bleeding for your entertainment.

If the kids were traumatized by that, the next stop should have been the monkey house.

All that farking and masturbation and poo-slinging'll shut 'em up.

Ash the barn owl was taking part in a display with his handler when a lioness in the enclosure clubbed him out of the air.

I can't stop laughing at this, for some reason. It's probably for the best I wasn't there.

Lionesses gonna do what they do.

wasn't there a thread a while back where someone posted a vid of a bird of prey swooping down, trying to attack a deer? or some large animal.

watson.t.hamster: You mean even after we put them in zoos they remain predators? Amazing.

This is why zoos should only contain baby animals. When they grow up we can use them as feed for the new baby animals. I don't know why these cruel zookeepers keep ignoring my emails, letters, and late-night phone calls.

When a lion swats your owl out of the air, let it go, because, man, it's gone.

This is why I model my marriage on lion relationships... If I have to do the 'man' work like home repair and reno, take out the garbage, kill pests, and be the bad guy with the kids, damn straight the wife can clean and bring me food.

Deal. As long as we get to occasionally toss some christians from the crowd in too. Lions need their vitamin C.

Is it the one with an eagle throwing goats off a cliff? I'm not for cruelty to animals, but when it's one animal doing it to another, I've got to admit it's kind of hilarious.

'Cause if that's the one, here it is -- warning, as said above, this is a video of an eagle throwing a goat off a cliff. While it is hilarious, the goat, you know, gets thrown off a cliff and such.

It's a predatory universe and worth being aware of it. I don't see what the big deal is in this case -- sad to lose a pet of course, but it's a pretty natural thing to happen and a good lesson for kids. Every burger we eat has death attached to it. Every sniffle of a cold is reminder of the constant bombardment of predatory pathogens. Predation and death plays out every day in every part of our world. Why the squeamishness?

It's just like when my house cat pounces on a small lizard outdoors.
(Only bigger, meaner and messier.)

BTW, if you turned a house cat loose in a lion cage, would that house cat be a snack within 10 minutes? Or would they spend a happy afternoon together grooming and playing together?
